Academic Year

Academic Year
2002 - 2003

Colleagues,

THANK YOU

Thank you to the members of the CTE advisory board who are cycling off the board at the end of this semester. These members are Kevin Farrell, Kathie Lampe, and Keith Haan. If you see these faculty around campus please join with me in thanking them for their contributions to the Center's programs over the past two (or more) years.

PRESENTATION ON USING POWER POINT

On APRIL 5 Dr. Ken Colwell and Dr. Carol Lyon presented suggestions on the most effective ways to use PowerPoint in college-level courses. The center taped their presentation and the question and answer session that followed. A copy of the videotape is available on loan from Paul Jacobson and copies of the handouts Carol and Ken provided are available from Paul also upon request. Send me your request and I'll wing a copy of the handouts or a copy of the videotape to you.

PUBLICATION RECEIVED

The Professor in the Classroom, (vol. 11:18) arrived recently. The title is: "A Strong Finish Requires Controlling Six Variables" and this number (the last of the year) also contains tips on faculty relationships. This trifold proposes six suggestions on how to keep students' motivation to learn in high gear. These suggestions include: keep your own level of interest in mind, look for additional ways to focus on academic achievement, make class activities as rewarding as possible, control student tension and concern, use specific and timely feedback, and control the academic climate and feel of the classroom. This number is worth a look since it provides some detailed, concrete questions for us to ask ourselves in order to detect threats to learning that may be affecting our classes without our full consciousness of them This number is available now in the several wall pocket locations and in the College of Business and ACCEL.

ANNUAL FACULTY/ACADEMIC STAFF RECOGNITION RECEPTION

The Faculty Development Committee's 18th annual faculty/academic staff recognition reception was held on April 19. Congratulations to all of the faculty who were recognized for their academic and scholarly accomplishments during the past year.

CTE PERIODICAL SUBSCRIPTIONS AVAILABLE

The Center subscribes to College Teaching and CHANGE: The Magazine of Higher Learning.  Back issues of both of these publications are in the Ambrose Room, 3rd floor of the library.
Three other publications subscribed to by the Center are available in several places on campus.  The Teaching Professor, The Professor in the Classroom and the National Teaching and Learning Forum are available as they arrive in the two wall pocket locations: in the old snack bar area in Ambrose Hall and in the coffee shop on Harrison St.  Back issues of these publications are kept in the Ambrose Room on the third floor of the Library along with the Center's book collection.
