John Dilg Show at Catich Gallery

“New Work,” a show featuring artist John Dilg of Iowa City, opened Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the St. Ambrose University Catich Gallery in the Galvin Fine Arts Center on the SAU campus.

"My paintings are based on memories of current or past cultural and personal events and employ iconic-based forms which, in concert with the titles, often imply narratives,” says Dilg. “I am especially interested in the mystery that surrounds or is created by connotative meaning."

Sienese painting, amateur and outsider art, 19th century landscape paintings, and signs and advertising are among the sources for Dilg’s work.

Dilg has received a National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship, three residency fellowships at the Yaddo Foundation, and a Fulbright Grant to India. Recent solo and group exhibitions include the Luise Ross Gallery, Moti Hasson Gallery and Kraushaar Galleries, New York City; Schmidt Contemporary Art, St. Louis; and the Esther Klein Art Gallery, Philadelphia. Dilg’s work is a part of selected public collections at the Figge Art Museum, Davenport; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Villafamés in Spain. Dilg received a B.F.A. in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design.

The show runs through Sept. 29 and is free and open to the public, with a reception on Friday, Sept. 8, from 5 – 7 p.m.

The gallery is open from 1 – 5 p.m., Tuesday – Friday.
