Darmody, Randle lead Bee men to WPU Invite title, women second
On an
unseasonable snowy October morning, the Fighting Bee men and women traveled to
Oskaloosa for the William Penn Invite and endured sub-freezing temperatures and
showed their stuff.
The women ran a shortened course, believed to be roughly
4.6km, and both Brooke Ashcraft (Jr., United Twp) and Abby Parsons
(Jr., LaSalle-Peru) finished in the top 10 for SAU. The Bee women rounded
out their top five with Lauren Cleary (Sr., Naperville Central), Dana Maier
(So., Sandburg) and Chelsee Lisk (Fr., Rushville-Industry) all
finishing in the top 20. The Fighting Bee women finished in second place, behind
Mount Mercy but in front of Grand View. GVU's Obsie Birru won the women's race
in a time of 16:23, Ashcraft finished in 18:08.
On the men's side, the Fighting Bees lived up to their No.
1 conference ranking winning the invite thanks to four top 10 finishes. Despite
the snow, four of the Bees top five men set personal bests. SAU, running without
No. 3 runner Doug Brusich, had four runners in the top 10, as John Darmody
(So., O'Dea) won the race in 26:10, establishing a course record while also
moving up to No. 5 on the SAU All-Time list.
Kevin Randle (Fr., Tremper) also made his way onto
the list, running 26:59 to finish fourth. He ranks No. 18 on the all-time list,
alongside SAU XC coach Dan Zeimet. Austin Quinn (Jr., Bloom. Central
Catholic) and Keith Randle (Jr., St. Joseph's) also set lifetime
bests en route to victory. Robbie Pogue (Fr., Dav. Central)) rounded out
the top five while a couple more freshmen, Ryan Buchanan (Fr., Charles City)
and Tyler Norby (Fr., Wahlert) rounded out the top seven. In all, 14
of the 21 men that raced ran lifetime bests.
The Bees scored 35 points, far outdistancing themselves
from MCC #2 Mount Mercy (62) and MCC #3 Grand View (79). Fellow MCC rivals
Ashford (5th, 129), William Penn (6th, 143) and Iowa Wesleyan (7th, 167) rounded
out the field for the conference preview.
