Minutes of the Educational Policies Committee February 5, 2002
The minutes of the January 29th meeting were read and approved with two changes:
1. Dan Zeimet was present.
2. There was an exception to the statement in reference to DBA 951 that “discussion followed about matters unrelated to the course at hand.” In the revised minutes, Dan’s name has been added and the controversial statement has been expunged. (Terry Schlabach moved, Pam Long seconded.)
1. Proposals from Masters of Criminal
Justice to
Michael Hustedde moved to accept, Greg Bereskin seconded. Melissa Burek clarified the time of course offering. Course will be offered in spring. Combining the existing courses makes the program more competitive. Intensity will be similar to the current offering. Motion carried.
2. Proposal from Theology
to add two new courses with general education status - THEO 251: Introduction
to Western Religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam and THEO 252:
Introduction to Eastern Religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism
Terry Schlabach moved to
approve, Kris Eitrheim seconded. Father
De Francisco explained that the two new courses would be offered for ACCEL
initially, and possibly as interim offerings on campus, but may be offered
later in the regular semester format. Students have indicated a desire for
in-depth study of either Eastern or Western religions.. Some overlap for
students taking one of the new courses and THEO 250 would not be a
problem. The new courses will need to
be added to the list of accepted general education courses in the catalog
description. The new courses will not
replace THEO250 so other programs requiring them will not be affected. Motion
carried.
3. Proposal from Communications to change COMM 233: Topics in Communications to COMM 360 (keep the same course description and with pre-requisites determined as needed by the special topics.) Pam Long moved to accept, Michael Hustedde seconded.
Ron Wastyn explained that the new course will have the
same credit hours as the course it replaces, but will not specify
prerequisites. It is intended to cover
material at a more advanced level than the previous offering. It was suggested
that labeling the new course a junior level course might make the distinction
clear to students. Motion carried.
The committee considered an unscheduled request from the
Political Science Department that their program review be postponed one
semester because of recent faculty and program changes. Greg Bereskin moved
to approve the request, Kris Eitrheim seconded. Motion carried.
There is no business pending for EPC, so no meeting will
be held February 12th.
Material for consideration should be sent to Marge Legg a week before
the next scheduled meeting.
Meeting adjourned.
