1) The Educational Policies Committee meeting of February 13, 2001 was
called to order at 3:15 PM by Terry Schalbach, Chair.
2) The motion was made by G Bereskin and seconded by K Eitrheim to
approve the minutes of the last meeting. Motion approved.
3) Service Learning Program Review: Motion made by D Haubrich
and seconded by C Herzig to approve the Service Learning Program review.
Fr. Bud Grant appeared to address this review and answer any questions
raised by the committee. Fr. Grant addressed the following issues:
a. That, since its inception five years ago, Service Learning remains
in many ways "experimental" in nature and is still working on its identity
b. Attempts are underway to make Service Learning more tied to the
academic components associated with the student's major
c. That lack of an operating budget requires volunteer involvement
from those (agency and faculty) wishing to participate
d. Question posed by T Schlabach that Service Learning consider being
"adopted" by the Theology department. Fr. Grant indicated that he
would be willing to take that question to the Theology department
e. Question posed by R Legg regarding the need to correct the catalog
regarding the Credit Hours assigned to Service Learning. Fr. Grant
agreed that the catalog needs to clearly identify Service Learning as a
1 CH course and not "variable" in nature.
f. The Service Learning program review was approved.
4) History department request to approve HIST 342 (The Irish Question
in Historical Perspective) as a regular course offering: J Stauff and R
Dye appeared to address this request. The motion was made by C Herzig
and
seconded by M Less to approve this. Issues addressed included:
a. T Schlabach questioned the course numbering (HIST342). J Stauff
explained that this number fits with a new numbering scheme for the History
department that will be proposed later this semester
b. R Dye then indicated that the course will eventually be offered
as 115/342 to allow less advanced students to also enroll.
c. Proposal to offer HIST 342 approved
5) HPESS Program Review: Motion by M Less, second by C Herzig to approve.
Present to discuss the program review were R Gwin, L Kilfoy, M Orfitelli,
D West. After R Gwin's opening comments explaining the move toward
a more science based curriculum and need for an expanded Fitness major
the following five individual majors were addressed:
a. Athletic Training Major: D West indicated that the SAU program appears
to be in good position to receive accreditation for this major. M
Legg indicated that CHEM 103 or CHEM 105 should be the designated pre-requisite
for this major as opposed to the listed CHEM 101. It was also noted that
BIOL 202 and BIOL 204 are required courses; BIOL 203 is recommended.
b. Fitness and Human Performance Major: The primary discussion centered
around the need to include a Senior Seminar and Aging Exercise course (282)
in the curriculum.
c. General Physical Education Major: M Orfitelli addressed questions
raised about this program. He indicated it is built for two populations:
a) those who do not currently want or meet the criteria for inclusion in
an education program at this point in time; and/or b) those who may wish
to
return at a later date to procure an education major. T Schlabach
indicated that a Writing Intensive course needs to be identified in this
major. It was also brought to the department's attention that the
required Computer Science course needs to be re-numbered and identified
as a CSCI offering.
d. Physical Education Teaching Major: Members of the HPESS department
indicated the primary changes to this program were alterations to the syllabi
and course expectations in specific classes.
e. Sports Management: L Kilfoy addressed questions from the committee.
It was indicated that the major change to the program was a new emphasis
on event and facilities management. The committee agreed that the
major needed to integrate a Writing Intensive course in the program.
f. Based upon committee discussions M Less moved and C Herzig seconded
a friendly amendment to the original motion. It was moved that three
majors (Athletic Training, Fitness and Human Performance, and Physical
Education Teaching) along with the Health Education Minor be approved;
following the identification and inclusion of Writing Intensive offerings
in two majors
(General Physical Education and Sports Management) the department is
asked to appear again before the committee for approval of those programs.
g. Amended motion approved.
6) It was announced that the next meeting of the Educational Policies
Committee will be on Tuesday, February 20, 2001
7) Moved by C Herzig, second by M Less to adjourn. Meeting adjourned
at 4:45 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Martha L Shockey, PhD
