1) Meeting was called to order by Terry Schlabach, Chair, at 3:15 PM
2) Motion to approve minutes of previous meeting: M Legg; Second: D
Haubrich. Minutes approved.
3) Name Change Proposal from Criminal Justice: Proposal to change the
current name (Master's program) to Master's of Criminal Justice and
Juvenile Justice Education. Moved: M Legg; Second: M Less
a) C Winston indicated that the proposal also entailed approval for
curriculum integration/change that would move the existing EDUC
methods/statistics course to the Criminal Justice department. B Ristow
explained this would allow those with expertise in the Criminal Justice
field to guide the research of education students taking juvenile justice
courses.
b) Friendly Amendment: M Legg; Second: M Less that both components of the
proposal be included in the vote
c) Motion approved.
4) Proposal to accept the General Education Assessment for Math Department:
Assessment of General Education criteria met through Math courses was
missing from the Program Review submitted by the department in 2000. Move
to accept: C Herzig; Second M Less. Motion approved.
5) Proposal to designate PSYC284/EDUC284 as fulfilling General Education
requirements in the Education department. Moved: M Shockey; Second: D
Haubrich. After a brief discussion regarding the fact that the committee
had not received supporting materials prior to the start of the meeting a
friendly amendment was made by Shockey; seconded by Haubrich to table the
proposal. Motion to table approved.
6) Proposal to rename SOC300 (Human Relations for Educators) to EDUC300
(Human Relations and Diversity in the Classroom): Moved: C Herzig; Second:
M Legg.
a) B Ristow indicated that the proposed change reflected important changes
at the state level wherein more emphasis is now placed on diversity than on
human relations as it had been in previous years.
b) B Ristow also explained that this course, although under the auspices of
the Sociology department for many years, had been taught by and attracted
Education majors. Hence, both departments support moving it to the
Education department.
c) It was determined in committee discussion that this will increase the
required hours for Education majors by 3 CH. Friendly amendment by Herzig;
second by M Legg to include this change in the proposal.
d) D Haubrich questioned whether this course would be available to
non-Education majors. Ristow indicated he expected it to be offered to
those outside the Education department but the final decision would be made
by the department as a whole once the course was moved.
e) D Moeller expressed concern that this move may set a precedent of
"specialized" courses and introduce future problems with regard to the time
frame in which students are able to complete the major requirements for
graduation.
f) Motion approved.
7) Proposal to approve the General Physical Education Major and the Sports
Management Program review: Moved: D Haubrich; Second: M Less.
a) General Education Major: Proposed designating HPED 361 (Kinesiology) as
Writing Intensive. This change had not appeared in the earlier program
review submitted to the committee.
b) General Education Major: Proposal to remove CSCI course from the
curriculum as it had been incorrectly listed.
c) Sports Management Program Review: Proposal to include HPED306
(WI-Promotions and Marketing) to fulfill writing intensive criterion.
d) M Legg brought it to the committee's attention that BIOL202 continues to
exist as a pre-requisite for Kinesiology yet that criterion does not appear
in the documents provided.
e) Friendly amendment by Haubrich; second by Less to approve General
Physical Education Major with the inclusion of BIOL202 as a required
foundation course. Motion approved.
f) C Herzig indicated that there was no supporting syllabus for the request
to approve HPED306 (WI-Promotions and Marketing) as a writing intensive
course. Herzig also indicated that the course listing needed to be changed
to reflect the fact that it is a 3 credit hour course.
g) Moved by D Moeller; Second by D Haubrich to table this proposal until
the department can provide the supporting materials needed (syllabus and
four-point outline). Motion approved.
8) Proposal to make curricular changes in Athletic Training Major and
Fitness and Human Performance Major. Moved: C Herzig; Second: M Shockey.
a) The department asked to remove CHEM 101 as pre-requisite, thus ensuring
that students take either CHEM 103 or CHEM 105.
b) It was brought to the attention of the committee that BIOL 101
requirement is to be removed with the catalog now to indicate: BIOL 101 OR
BIOL 103 OR BIOL 123.
c) Friendly amendment by Herzig; second by Shockey to separate the two
majors for consideration.
d) Proposed changes to Athletic Training Major approved.
e) Moved by D Moeller; Second by M Less to table consideration of the
Fitness and Human Performance Major until supporting material is received
from the department. Motion approved.
9) Motion to approved Master's of Orthotic Science Program: Chris Hovorka
was present to explain and discuss the proposed curriculum for
implementation of the MOS program. Motion to approve: M Legg; Second M Less.
a) This program represents the first Master's Program of Orthotic Science
in the US. It is to be an inter-disciplinary program that incorporates the
expertise of many departments into its curriculum
b) Concern was raised by the committee that required upper-level courses
may not be available in summer sessions. Should this happen it would
negatively affect the student's ability to take the sequenced courses when
needed and thus affect projected completion date of the program. D Bozik
indicated that the department recognized there may be a need to adjust this
should the required courses not be available at these times.
c) C Westensee brought it to the attention of the committee that MOS 501
should read MOS 510. C Hovorka noted the need to make this change and
indicated it will appear as MOS 510 in all future documents.
d) The committee requested clarification of the department's commencement
policy. It was indicated that all program requirements must be met prior
to allowing a student to participate in commencement ceremonies. However,
a disclaimer that remains in the program materials will allow for
unforeseen contingencies (e.g. delay in receiving course grade, etc.)
should these arise.
e) K Kelly questioned the designation of Human Pathology (HS 500) and
Pharmacology (HS 501) as Health Sciences courses. It was explained that
these courses are so designated because they are shared between
disciplines. OT is responsible for their program assessment.
f) D Bozik acknowledged the outstanding work done by C Hovorka on the
development of this program and its curriculum. Gratitude was expressed by
the committee for this extraordinary effort and outcome
g) Proposal Approved.
10) Motion by D Haubrich; Second by M Less to adjourn. Meeting was
adjourned at 4:40 PM.
Respectfully Submitted,
ML Shockey, PhD
