Organizational Business:

All members were present for the first meeting of the year. Two more student members are yet to be named.  Meetings will be held on Tuesdays at 3:15pm.  Marge Legg will serve as Chair, Bonnie Leonhardt as Secretary.

It is hoped that we will have materials from the departments one week in advance when an item is to be discussed, and two weeks in advance for program reviews.

New Business:

John Delaney, Director of Faculty and Curriculum Development at ACCEL, presented information about the proposed Accounting major for the BBA.  ACCEL has worked closely with the Accounting Department to survey student preferences and to design an accelerated program that would be taught by current faculty and that would preserve the present curriculum but would better accommodate the needs of adult students. Currently, Accounting is not available in an accelerated format. ACCEL is proposing to begin a cohort in Spring of 2002 that would include evening classes taught on campus in an 8 week format (classes twice a week) and 6 weeks in summer (as is currently the departmental practice.  Courses would be identical to those taught currently in the non-accelerated evening class, and would be taught by full-time faculty with Intermediate Accounting taught by an adjunct faculty member who regularly teaches that course for the program. The program would enroll around 20 students in this trial cohort; at present, they have twelve commitments and seven more students expressing an interest.

Discussion followed about whether or not this change needed to come before EPC for approval.  It was decided that it did, because it is a BBA with an Accounting major as opposed to the BA with an Accounting major.

We discussed whether the committee also needed to approve the inclusion of traditional-aged students who would also be taking these classes, since ACCEL is usually limited to non-trads.  Allison Ambrose explained that since these courses replace the Department’s current night-time offerings, it is necessary to accommodate all students. This will be accomplished by having the courses cross-listed, and traditional students paying the regular tuition for the course.  The committee decided that they did not have to approve this, since it was not a change in ACCEL’s enrollment policy.

The proposed program will be considered for approval at the Sept. 18th meeting.

Teri Schlabach moved to adjourn, Kris Eitrheim seconded the motion. It was carried.
