Minutes of  the September 25 2001 meeting were approved as distributed with the following changes:  (Kris Eitrheim moved, Terry Schlabach seconded)

Under the heading Social Work Course Approvals

Replace “The accrediting agency for our MSW” with “the institutions approving school social work certification” in second paragraph.

Replace”students looking to work in Illinois” with “students seeking school social work positions in Illinois” in second paragraph.

1. Motion to approve new course - LEAD 201: Introduction to Leadership 3 credits and  to approve it for general education status as social science (Don Moeller moved, Kris E. seconded)

It was agreed that Social Science was the appropriate general education credit for this course.  The appropriate prefix will be discussed and reported back, as there is no existing interdisciplinary prefix. Motion carried.

2. Motion to approve  7 new courses EDUC 340- Teaching English/Language Arts in Secondary Schools (English majors), 341 Teaching History and Social Sciences in Secondary Schools (History, economics, political science majors),  342 Teaching Business in Secondary Schools (General business majors),  343 Teaching Science in Secondary Schools (biology, chemistry, physics, general science majors),  344 Teaching Foreign Language in Secondary Schools (Spanish, French, German majors),  345 Teaching Speech and Theatre in Secondary Schools (Communications/theatre majors), and 346 Teaching Psychology/Sociology in Secondary Schools (Psychology/Sociology majors), - 1 credit each (Terry S. moved, Cathy D. seconded)

Suzanne Seeber explained that syllabi were not presented now because some courses will not be needed immediately.  Two or three of the courses will be offered this spring. The public schools are cooperating, and if the classes are not offered in the schools, they will be taught by faculty with recent secondary school teaching experience. Syllabi will be provided to the committee soon. Motion carried.

3. Motion to approve name Change MUS 122 from String Ensemble to Symphony Orchestra and approval of a new course MUS 104 - Piano Class I -1 credit (Mast) (Kris E. moved, Pam Long seconded) Motion carried.

4. Motion to approve a revised curriculum for an International MBA to be offered in Shenyang, China starting summer, 2002 including 13 courses with no electives. One new course will need to be created in Leadership and Ethics to replace Leadership Through People Skills, and a combination of two accounting courses (Don M. moved, Cathy Daters seconded)

Rick Dienesh and Pat O’Leary explained the proposed new program.  The program is an alliance between an English language school operating in Shenyang and directed by a Quad Cities native, and St. Ambrose University to teach one cohort of Chinese students in Shenyang province. The students will have English-speaking ability before the program begins as demonstrated by a TOEFL or other measures.  The English language school will present three weeks of prework for each course according to SAU faculty directions.  The SAU faculty member will spend 30 hours in a one-week format presenting the material with three assistants skilled in the Chinese language present in the classroom.  The students will then have an additional review time after the SAU faculty’s departure to consolidate the learning.  As a result, this program will have double the contact hours of the traditional MBA course. Courses will be scheduled to allow faculty a week of adjustment time from travel, and will be structured so that interruption with regular semester work is minimized.  Faculty orientation will be presented before the overseas assignment.

The amended LTPS course came about because of concerns that the experiential format of the Leadership Through People Skills course would be inappropriate for this population.  The organization offering this program concurred with this judgment.  The proposed substitution has been approved by the Managerial Studies department and will be developed by Randy Richardson with assistance from other department members.  Concern that this course and all the courses strongly reflect the ethical position of this University was expressed.  The Business College representatives concurred. The program is still being negotiated and must get approval from the accrediting agencies before beginning.  Financial arrangements are being monitored.  Rick assured the committee that any deterioration in the Chinese situation that might endanger SAU faculty would result in an immediate end to the program.  Motion carried.
