The Educational Policies Committee was called to order at 3:15 on Tuesday, December 5, 2000. The minutes of the last meeting were corrected to read MUS099 as 0 Credit Hours rather than 1 Credit Hour. Moved by M Legg to accept; Second by D Moeller. Corrected minutes were approved.
Four agenda items were discussed:
1) Nursing: Approve NURS 430 (Nursing for the Older Adult) as a WI
course. Moved by M Legg; Second by K Eitrheim. The discussion
centered around why this was offered as a 2 CH course as opposed to a 3
CH course. J Enslein explained that most nursing courses are offered
for 2 credits with the upper-level clinical courses offering 3 credit hours.
Discussion then centered around the department's desire to have the Student
Success Center read first drafts of the students' work. The suggestion
was made that this be reconsidered and that the department also consider
incorporating peer reviews into the course.
2) Service Learning/Learning Community: R Legg asked for approval to offer one course of Service Learning as a part of a Learning Community for Fall 2001. Moved by C Herzig; Second by K Eitrheim. This would be a pilot course to determine if entering first year students are able to handle the requirements of such a course during their first semester at SAU. If it is successful consideration will be given to expanding first semester offerings in the future. Motion approved.
3) ACCEL Five-year Review: Moved by M Legg to approve; Second by C Herzig.
H Gardina first requested that BUS 336 and BUS 337 be removed from the
document and that those be evaluated at a later date. She then responded
to concerns regarding the numbers of offerings in Economics. The
specific issue focused on the fact that ECON306 was to be the only required
course in this area. G Bereskin voiced his concern that students
also needed ECON 312 (Micro) and ECON 313 (Macro) to fully understand the
nature of the economy. This led to a larger discussion regarding
the relationship between ACCEL and the specific departments it represents
on campus. H Gardina explained that the curriculum proposals appearing
in the five year review represent an attempt to bring the departments (i.e.
those on campus and those at ACCEL) closer together in their offerings
and requirements and also reminded the committee that the ACCEL program
was to offer a degree completion option to students rather than a "start
to finish" program. The original motion was then amended to allow
for approval of the five year review with the exclusion of BUS 336 and
BUS 337; it was also asked that the Business department review the suggested
format that students take only ECON 306 and are not required to take ECON
312 and ECON 313. These issues will be brought back to the committee
for future consideration. Amended motion approved.
4) Role of Educational Policies Committee: T Schlabach addressed the possible need to reevaluate the role of EPC and the issues it is to be addressing. Due to the lengthy nature of the meeting it was decided to table this discussion until the next meeting on December 12, 2000.
Moved by C Herzig; Second by M Legg to adjourn. The meeting was adjourned at 4:25 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
