  1. Meeting called to order by Regina Stephens, Chair at 3:05pm
  2. Faculty Handbook Committee presented the 2nd reading of section 1 of the handbook for consideration. Motion to approve section 1 by Michael Hustedde and 2nd by Terry Schlabach. Motion passed by voice vote.
  3. Faculty Handbook committee presented the first reading of section 3 of the faculty handbook. Motion to consider by Randy Richards and 2nd by Ann Preston. Discussion centered on the language relating to grounds for dismissal of full-time faculty. Especially contentious was the language relating to academic freedom and what constitutes actions that violate the principles of catholic teaching either in the classroom or in public venues. Motion by Bill Hixon and 2nd by Jim Cook to remove “public circumstances.” Call the question by Dee Wellman and 2nd by Ann Preston. Vote by show of hands tied at 13 yeah and 13 nay. Motion failed at the first reading.
  4. Discussion of harassment policy. Early on in the discussion it was pointed out that the University and its attorneys have been looking at this issue and crafting policy addressing harassment. Before proceeding further, the Assembly asks that Shirley Easler (SAU HR) and a representative of Lane and Waterman (SAU’s attorneys) be invited to the next faculty assembly to discuss legal aspects associated with harassment policy as it relates to faculty governance.
  5. Motion to adjourn by Andy Swift, and 2nd. Meeting adjourned by unanimous consent.
