Minutes for the Meeting of the Faculty Assembly

September 12, 2002

  1. L. Brown called the first meeting of the 2002-2003 school year to order at 3:07pm.  L. Brown then led the Assembly in a prayer.

  1. J. Van Speybroek made a motion to approve the minutes from the April 11, 2002 meeting, which was seconded by D. Bozik.  T. Burns suggested that the Faculty Assembly Chair recognize that while point 5 in the April 11 minutes states “…the Faculty Assembly Chair for 2002-2003 will be responsible for initiating committee formation,” the Task Force on the Faculty Handbook committee has already been appointed and is currently chaired by R. Richards.  Suggestion was noted and the motion carried.

  1. L. Brown introduced the new officers for the 2002-2003 Faculty Assembly.  Chair, L. Brown; Chair-elect, R. Serianz; Secretary, T. Schuster; Spotter, J. Van Speybroek.  Faculty Assembly is currently seeking someone who has an understanding of the parliamentary procedures to serve as Faculty Assembly Parliamentarian.  Contact L. Brown if interested.

  1. R. Serianz provided an update on the United Way Campaign.  Last year, 32% of the SAU community contributed a total of $18,729 funds.  This year, we have 42% of the SAU community contributing a total of $21,150.  Contributions and white elephant gifts are still in need and being collected by R. Serianz.

  1. J. Stauff provided an update on the Study Abroad options at SAU.  Two new semester-long programs will begin spring of 2003 in both Ecuador and Ireland.  J. Stauff asks that faculty encourage students to check out the educational and affordable opportunities to study abroad through SAU.  A complete list of programs is available at http://www.sau.edu/studyabroad/.

  1. W. Oberle provided an update on the AAUP chapter at SAU and the Integrity newsletter that is published once a semester.  All new faculty are encouraged to submit a short piece introducing themselves to the SAU community.  All other faculty members are encouraged to submit articles sharing changes and growth in their respective departments.  The AAUP meets the Wednesday after the Faculty Assembly meetings at 8am in the Cosgrove seminar room.

  1. L. Brown reminded everyone that Faculty Assembly meetings are the 2nd Thursday of each month.  The next meeting will be held October 10, 2002 at 3:05pm in Galvin 160.

  1. A move to adjourn was made by B. Jacobson and seconded by T. Burns.  The motion carried and the assembly adjourned at 3:35pm.

Respectfully Submitted,

Tracy J. Schuster
