Minutes for the Meeting of the Faculty Assembly
September 13, 2001
1. The meeting was called to order at 3:09 p.m. by J. Stauff. Fr. C. Adam opened with a brief statement about events held in response to the recent terrorist attacks: Pax Christi at 9:00 p.m. September 13 followed by a candlelight vigil march and then an all-night prayer vigil. Fr. Chuck then prayed the prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi. M. Hustedde suggested that, since many Ambrosians are receiving e-mail messages of solidarity and support, we collect them at a common electronic site for all who wish to view them. Fr. Chuck said that he would come up with a means to do so. In the meantime, you can forward any emails to Fr. Chuck.
2. J. Staff introduced the faculty assembly officers: Chair, J. Stauff; chair-elect, L. Brown; secretary, C. DeVolder. He noted that the office of parliamentarian is vacant and made a plea for a volunteer to fill the position. All faculty members present then introduced themselves.
3. J. Stauff called for a motion to approve the minutes from the April Faculty Assembly Meeting. The motion was made by B. Jacobsen, seconded by K. Kelly, and carried.
4. J. Stauff presented an overview of the task force charged with reviewing the faculty handbook. He noted that there are some issues in the faculty handbook that should be addressed thoroughly (e.g. grievances). This task force comprises A. Ambrose (chair) from the College of Business, K. Farrell from the College of Human Services, B. Pitts and M. Burek from the College of Arts and Sciences. Opportunities for faculty input will arise as the task force proceeds and the group will report to the faculty-as-a-whole in the spring.
5. J. Stauff reported on the progress of the United Way campaign and urged faculty members who have not already done so to pledge. So far $17,000 has been raised and we are approaching last year’s mark of $23,000. Since United Way is a year-round project, Stauff issued a request for volunteers to serve on a more-or-less continual basis.
6. W. Oberle reported on the AAUP. The revised National Offices policies and procedures book has been published and is available now. W. Oberle has distributed an announcement for the organizational kickoff meeting and a calendar of chapter meetings for this year. A slate of officers was presented, the election will be Wednesday, September 19, 2001.
7. S. Goebel from the office of Planned Giving (and now an adjunct faculty member) invited all to a seminar on estate planning. This seminar will be held October 12 from approximately 10:00-11:30 a.m. in the Cosgrove seminar room. Ann Newman, J.D. will be speaking on different aspects of estate planning. Lunch will be provided following the seminar.
8. Fr. G. McDaniel commented on the committee for the search for the chief academic officer. Fr. McDaniel encouraged the committee to be mindful of SAU’s liberal arts Catholic tradition.
9. As there was no new business, J. Stauff encouraged faculty members to bring items to him for the agenda so that issues or concerns may be addressed expediently.
10. A motion to adjourn was made by R. Serianz, seconded by P. Jacobsen, and carried. The meeting adjourned at 4:46.
Respectfully submitted,
Carol DeVolder
