Proposals Submitted Under EXEMPT Status

4 copies of exempt research proposals must be submitted to Maryann Striegel in the Assessment and Institutional Research office (located on the north side of Ambrose Hall, under the brick archway) one week before the meeting date.

PLEASE NOTE: All proposals that are not submitted using the proper format will not be reviewed by the IRB Committee and will be returned to the investigator(s).
  1. Research involving human subjects that do not include any unique identifiers (names, social security numbers, etc). If the researcher can identify who the subjects are (even though they may not be recording names) – the projects should be submitted as non-exempt.
  2. Research that is anonymous (surveys with no name and no way to identify the subject).
  3. Research that involves only minimal risk.

To be "Exempt", the subjects must be put to no more than minimal risk: no pain, physical danger, embarrassment, emotional arousal, or psychological stress beyond levels normally expected in everyday life. Nor shall the project induce or attempt to induce long-term or significant changes in the participant's behavior. There must not be concealment or misinformation such that the participant might choose not to participate in the research had he/she been aware of the true state of affairs. The IRB may decide that certain research may not be exempt, depending on the level or risk presented to the subjects.
