When is a project subject to IRB review?

Projects that do not need to be submitted to IRB

  1. Projects that are not considered research: Research is defined by OHRP as “a systematic investigation designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge.”
Projects that are not typically considered research are
    1. Course projects includes interviewing ONE person
    2. Oral Histories
  2. Projects that do not involve human subjects (secondary data analysis, which is raw data sets compiled with no identifying information). This does not include case studies where subjects may be identified

Projects that do need to be submitted to the IRB fall into two categories: "Exempt" and "Non Exempt."

"EXEMPT" means that the proposal is not reviewed by the full IRB committee, but is instead reviewed by an IRB sub-committee.

"NON EXEMPT" means that the proposal is subject to full IRB committee review.
