Why should I consider a career in Industrial Engineering?
If you like math and science, want to experience diverse challenges and opportunities,
like working with people to make things happen, and want a career that offers security and advancement,
Industrial Engineering (IE) is for you. IEs work in almost every walk of life from factories to government
offices to hospitals to research facilities to educational institutions.
An IE degree does not tie you down to a single job title.
IEs work in many positions: from plant manager to human resources director to safety director to FBI
agent to CEO/President. Any job that requires management expertise is a potential home for an IE.
IEs continually hone their skills with many going on to obtain advanced engineering degrees or MBAs.
The opportunities to advance are numerous.
- What is the employment outlook for Industrial Engineers?
A recent local survey indicated that there was a need for 6,000 additional technical personnel
in the Quad-City region by 2006. The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates
that overall employment in industrial engineering will increase, and due to the
number of industrial engineers that move into management jobs no longer categorized as
“industrial engineer,” there will be many additional openings for replacements.
On average, the salary for industrial engineers with a bachelor’s
degree is $40,000 – $70,000 a year.
- What are some advantages of the St. Ambrose Industrial Engineering program?
The Industrial Engineering program at St. Ambrose is accredited
by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET),
which means the course requirements, quality of instruction and
the curriculum meet or exceed nationally established requirements.
The SAU program places greater emphasis on the liberal arts and
sciences than do many other engineering programs.
Our program is small, enabling us to give each student the personal
attention they need to succeed in their engineering studies. We have
an established student support system providing tutoring and other
assistance needed to help you succeed.
Our programs are designed to support your goals whether you are a
full-time student or a non-traditional student.
You can succeed at St. Ambrose whether you transfer from a community
college or enter the university directly out of high school. Our engineering
courses alternate between daytime and evening classes to enhance student access
for both traditional and non-traditional students.
- Who can apply for the Industrial Engineering program?
High school students who meet the general admission requirements
of St. Ambrose may apply. Students most likely to succeed in the IE program are
those who experienced success in math and science courses in high school.
Students may transfer after having attended another college if they meet
the transfer standards of the university. Students may transfer either prior
to or after obtaining an Associate degree.
Due to the number of math and science courses that need to be completed
before higher-level industrial engineering courses can be taken,
persons transferring should consult the
Industrial Engineering Department at SAU
to determine appropriate courses and develop a study plan leading to the
Bachelor’s of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSIE).
- What about students with a bachelor’s degree in another field?
Students already holding a bachelor’s or higher degree in another field may apply for the program.
Due to the number of math and science courses that need to be completed
before higher level industrial engineering courses can be taken,
persons holding other degrees should consult the
Industrial Engineering Department
at SAU to determine actual requirements and develop a study plan to obtain the degree.
- What are the opportunities for a student transferring from another bachelor’s program
into the SAU Industrial Engineering program?
The Industrial Engineering Department welcomes students transferring
and will work with the applicant to assure the best transfer plan
based on academic strengths of the applicant and prerequisites required
in the program. Due to the number of math and science courses that need to
be completed before higher level industrial engineering courses can be
taken, persons transferring from another bachelor’s program should consult
the
Industrial Engineering Department at SAU to determine actual requirements
and develop a study plan to obtain the degree.
- What supporting or pre-engineering courses are required?
Students must take pre-engineering courses in mathematics and science to build a
foundation for the study of industrial engineering courses.
Students should complete most of their general education requirements
before beginning higher-level industrial engineering courses. Visit the industrial engineering
Web site for more information.
- Will community college coursework transfer to St. Ambrose?
St. Ambrose works closely with the community college districts in
Iowa and Illinois to ensure that your coursework will transfer to St. Ambrose.
Also, students can jointly enroll at St. Ambrose while attending a community
college, permitting the student to enjoy a number of benefits of being a St.
Ambrose student including advising from the Industrial Engineering Department.
- What’s the bottom line?
You can obtain an affordable accredited engineering degree
without having to leave the Quad City area.
- What financial aid is available?
St. Ambrose University and the Eastern Iowa Community College
District (EICCD), with community colleges in Clinton, Scott and Muscatine,
have joined forces through the Science Technology and Engineering Program,
or STEP, to prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s careers in the engineering
field. STEP provides financial and academic support, and helps recruit
underrepresented groups especially into engineering programs.
The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Talent Expansion
Program (STEP) funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), provides
need-based scholarships of up to $3,000 renewable for the duration of the
grant for engineering and physics students.
STEP scholars are also eligible for academic support services, tutoring,
peer/faculty mentoring, professional seminars, faculty advising and
internships. Retention programs and learning communities are offered to
increase minority enrollment and graduation rates in engineering programs. More information
on
STEP scholarships is also available.
We also offer scholarships in art, music, theater, and in 18 men’s and
women’s NAIA Division II athletic programs.
St. Ambrose requires that all students complete the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to receive assistance such as grants, loans,
and scholarships from state and federal governments. We strive to make
St. Ambrose an affordable opportunity for potential students. Additional
financial aid information is also available.
The STEP program at St. Ambrose University is funded by the National
Science Foundation (NSF) under STEM Talent Expansion Program (STEP) (NSF #0431502).
