Exchange Visitor Scholars
St. Ambrose University periodically invites international
faculty, short term scholars, consultants, guest lecturers and/or specialists
to our campus. Exchange visitors to campus may engage in the following
activities as specified in their St. Ambrose contract:
-
studying
-
teaching
-
lecturing
-
observing
-
consulting.
An international professor coming to SAU to teach:
-
may conduct research (if specified by the
institution)
-
cannot be tenured but may temporarily hold a
tenured position
-
may enroll in classes as long as they are
incidental to the primary activity
-
may stay for a three-week minimum to three-year
maximum period
-
cannot leave after spring and then reenter fall
semester in the same professor category but would have to stay through
the summer or reenter as a short-term scholar
-
should have a minimum of a Bachelor degree, but
this is not required.
-
exchange visiting
scholars are required to pay taxes on income earned. See Taxes
for additional information.
A foreign national invited in exchange visitor status
must follow the following procedure:
-
The academic department, in conjunction with the Dean
and the administration, will decide if they want to extend an invitation to
the foreign national.
-
The English proficiency of the exchange visitor
will be assessed from a standard English as a foreign language test or
a St. Ambrose assessment test. Documentation will be forwarded to St.
Ambrose.
-
The Department Chair or Dean, with assistance
from the foreign national, will complete the
required intake form and submit it to the
International Student Services.
-
The exchange visitor needs to complete the Declaration
of Finances form , attach supporting financial documents and
forward to the International Student Services.
-
Once the intake form is completed the International Student Services will then
prepare the immigration documents required to apply for a J1
Exchange Visitor Visa. Because there are numerous and
complicated regulations pertaining to the immigration benefits and
restrictions of each individual Exchange Visitor Category, the
International Student Services has been assigned to advise each foreign
national on an individual basis.
-
The International Student Services will continue to
function as
liaison between incoming international visitors and other SAU
departments. Centralizing these responsibilities for both international students and
scholars allows for a smoother transition for the visitor into our
campus and local communities and provides a focal location for the visitor to direct
his/her questions.
-
All academic issues, such as department
orientation and policies and procedures will be handled by the
department hosting the scholar and the Office of the Academic Vice
President.
-
Additional cross-cultural
experiences and voluntary activities will be provided for the visitor
exposing them to American society, culture and institutions. The
visitor is encouraged to voluntarily share his/her language,
culture and history with Americans as the Exchange Visitor Program
suggests.
