Inviting Exchange Visitor Scholars to Campus

SAU has the opportunity to invite international faculty, short term scholars, consultants, guest lecturers and specialists to our campus. St. Ambrose has recently been authorized by the Department of State to issue the necessary immigration papers to invite foreign nationals to our campus for a variety of purposes.

Activities can include:

  • studying

  • teaching

  • lecturing

  • observing

  • consulting.

An international professor coming to SAU to teach:

  • may conduct research

  • cannot be tenured but may temporarily hold a tenured position

  • may enroll in classes as long as they are incidental to the primary activity

  • may stay for a three-week minimum to three-year maximum period

  • cannot leave after spring and then reenter fall semester in the same professor category but would have to stay through the summer or reenter as a short-term scholar

  • should have a minimum of a Bachelor degree, but this is not required.

The procedure for you to invite a foreign national is simple.

  1. Your department, in conjunction with your Dean and the administration, decides if you want to extend an invitation to a foreign national.

  2. Your Department Chair or Dean completes the required intake form and submits it to the International Student Services.

  3. Even though it is not necessary for a foreign national to be part of an exchange agreement, if s/he will be coming over as part of an exchange, you will need to contact Jon Stauff to clarify the exchange requirements. Currently we have faculty exchange agreements with institutions in Ecuador , Germany and Brazil

  4. The International Student Services will then handle all immigration requirements necessary. Because there are numerous and complicated regulations pertaining to the immigration benefits and restrictions of each individual Exchange Visitor Category, the International Student Services has been assigned to advise each foreign national on an individual basis.

  5. The International Student Services also functions as liaison between incoming international visitors and other SAU departments. Centralizing these responsibilities for both international students and scholars allows for a smoother transition for the visitor into our campus and local communities and provides a focal location for you and the visitor to direct questions.

  6. All academic issues, such as department orientation and policies and procedures will be handled by the department hosting the scholar and the Office of the Academic Vice President.

  7. St. Ambrose is required by law to provide additional cultural experiences for these international visitors to our campus. The entire campus can assist in arranging cross-cultural experiences and voluntary activities to the visitor providing the broadest exposure to American society, culture and institutions. The visitor must also be encouraged to voluntarily share his/her language, culture and history with Americans as well.

If you have any ideas on how you might like to utilize this process please call the International Student Services. SAU will be required to invite at least 5 exchange visitors per year to maintain our designation of Exchange Visitor Sponsor.
