J1 Exchange Student Visitor Employment Opportunities
J1
Exchange Visitor Students are permitted three kinds of employment:
I.
On-campus work
II.
Academic Training related to the course of study during and
after studies
III.
Other employment related to funding or economic necessity
resulting from circumstances that have occurred after the original J
Exchange Visitor status was issued
Requirements
for all Employment:
Before authorization is given
to work the student must:
- Be
in good academic standing
- Be
in the
US
primarily to study
I.
On Campus Employment must be:
- Done
on campus
- Authorized
in writing by the Director of the International Student Services BEFORE
employment begins (even for on campus employment)
- Done
while engaged in full-time academic studies
- Authorization
can be valid for up to 12 months time
- No
more than 20 hours per week except during official school breaks when
it can be full-time
- Authorization
is automatically terminated when the student’s program of study ends
II.
Academic Training
Academic training is work,
training or experience done that relates directly to the program of study
the student is engaged in. It may be paid or unpaid, with a variety of
employers, and either done as individual activities or as continuous
employment.
Academic
Training must be:
- Authorized
in writing by the Director of the International Student Services BEFORE
employment begins (even for on campus employment)
- Authorized
for up to 12 months time
- Preferably
no more than 20 hours per week except during official school breaks
when it can be full-time. However the regulations are unclear on this
issue and the student may be authorized to do Academic Training full
time even before completing his/her program of study.
- Done
with a specific employer
- Directly
related to the student’s field of study
- Shorter
in duration than the length of time in the program of study (with a
maximum of 18months). (If the student is here for one semester the
authorized time of employment for Academic Training will be 4 months.)
- Accumulated
monthly even if the student is working part time during the academic
year and full-time during breaks. (6 part time months and 4 fulltime
months of academic training are counted as 10 months total against the
maximum of 18 months available time.)
- Paid
after completion of program of study unless the student can prove they
have sufficient resources to cover their living expenses during that
time.

Procedure
for On Campus (
I.
) and Off Campus (II) Employment:
1.
Obtain a letter from the employer containing the following
information: description of training program, location, job title, name
and address of supervisor, number of hours per week working, salary, and
dates of the training. This will be helpful for the Advisor when
completing the Advisor Recommendation form.
2.
Complete the Academic Training Advisor Recommendation Form
found in OfGA and attached
3.
Complete the Request for Academic Training form
4.
Make an appointment with the Director of OfGA to help you
secure a Social Security number.
Exchange Visitor Students are
required to pay taxes on income earned. See Taxes for
additional information.
