J1 Exchange Student Visitor Employment Opportunities

J1 Exchange Visitor Students are permitted three kinds of employment:

I.                    On-campus work

II.                 Academic Training related to the course of study during and after studies

III.               Other employment related to funding or economic necessity resulting from circumstances that have occurred after the original J Exchange Visitor status was issued

Requirements for all Employment:

Before authorization is given to work the student must:

  1. Be in good academic standing
  2. Be in the US primarily to study

I.           On Campus Employment must be:

  1. Done on campus
  2. Authorized in writing by the Director of the International Student Services BEFORE employment begins (even for on campus employment)
  3. Done while engaged in full-time academic studies
  4. Authorization can be valid for up to 12 months time
  5. No more than 20 hours per week except during official school breaks when it can be full-time
  6. Authorization is automatically terminated when the student’s program of study ends

II.        Academic Training

Academic training is work, training or experience done that relates directly to the program of study the student is engaged in. It may be paid or unpaid, with a variety of employers, and either done as individual activities or as continuous employment.

Academic Training must be:

  1. Authorized in writing by the Director of the International Student Services BEFORE employment begins (even for on campus employment)
  2. Authorized for up to 12 months time
  3. Preferably no more than 20 hours per week except during official school breaks when it can be full-time. However the regulations are unclear on this issue and the student may be authorized to do Academic Training full time even before completing his/her program of study.
  4. Done with a specific employer
  5. Directly related to the student’s field of study
  6. Shorter in duration than the length of time in the program of study (with a maximum of 18months). (If the student is here for one semester the authorized time of employment for Academic Training will be 4 months.)
  7. Accumulated monthly even if the student is working part time during the academic year and full-time during breaks. (6 part time months and 4 fulltime months of academic training are counted as 10 months total against the maximum of 18 months available time.)
  8. Paid after completion of program of study unless the student can prove they have sufficient resources to cover their living expenses during that time.

III .       Other employment related to funding or economic necessity

Please see the Director of the International Student Services for this category.

Procedure for On Campus ( I. ) and Off Campus (II) Employment:

1.      Obtain a letter from the employer containing the following information: description of training program, location, job title, name and address of supervisor, number of hours per week working, salary, and dates of the training. This will be helpful for the Advisor when completing the Advisor Recommendation form.

2.      Complete the Academic Training Advisor Recommendation Form found in OfGA and attached

3.      Complete the Request for Academic Training form

4.      Make an appointment with the Director of OfGA to help you secure a Social Security number.
