IMMIGRATION
and POLICY ISSUES:
1.Tsunami
Relief Project
First and foremost let me thank all of you for
your support of me during this tsunami relief effort. It was
emotionally and physically more difficult than I ever expected but
it was a valuable experience for me both personally and
professionally. Helping these people who have lost everything has
already changed my perspective on many things forever. We have so
much to be thankful for here in the US.
My sincere thanks to Drs. Rogalski and Loftus for
supporting this project. Thanks also to LaRee and Vera who so
professionally covered the office for me and to Dan Zeimet and
Anna Goodwin who were poised to assist in case of emergencies. As
many of you know I was able to communicate from Sri Lanka via email
so we avoided delays in handling some concerns.
If you are interested in seeing some of the
photos from my trip please access the web site listed below....

It is currently the hottest month of the year in
Sri Lanka....sometimes reaching 110 sensory degrees. The first part
of my days were spent cleaning up the debris left by the tsunami
waves on the beaches....toothbrushes, clothing, school books,
dishes, etc. Separating the recyclables from the trash. Following
this we cleared the rubble from shattered homes, chiseling the
mortar from bricks and stones that could be reused and removing what
could not. Finally, at the end of the day we spent time with the
children in the refugee center and camps teaching them basic English
and playing games such as cricket. There is still a huge need in Sri
Lanka and little relief has gotten through to the people. Here is a
link to one of the volunteer projects I would like to continue to
support in Sri Lanka www.peraliya .
2.Papers
for Summer Travel
Please be sure that you have your I-20's signed
before traveling out of the US this summer. If you need to get a
new visa while gone please let me know so that I can prepare the
necessary papers.

1.Congratulations
to the EISA Recipient
Congratulations
to Rosana Avila for being the 2005 recipient of the Exceptional
International Student Award. While at SAU Rosana has
continuously demonstrated excellence in her academic work as
well as personal involvement. The award was presented to her at the
Student Awards Ceremony last Thursday night.
2.Sri
Lanka Meets Cuba
I would like to invite those of you who are interested in my
recent trip to Sri Lanka to join me for lunch at the Taste of Cuba
next Tuesday the 17th at noon. I will bring my photos and share a
little about what I saw and did during the tsunami relief work
there. At the same time I would like you to bring me up to date on
how things went here while I was gone.
3.Conference
for International Educators
I will be attending the annual conference for
International Educators from Saturday May 28th through Friday June
3rd. I will be accessible via email and phone so this trip should be
less complicated for our communication process. However, if there is
anything that needs to be taken care of in person, please bring it
to my attention before I leave. Thanks.
