About Learning Communities
The ACE Learning Community program was developed to create a new
learning environment for students, both first-semester and continuing students.
Individual Learning Communities are tailored to meet the interests and needs of
a specific student groups. For new students, most learning communities consist
of two General Education courses and a section of New Student Seminar, NSS 101.
The Learning Community's courses are thematically linked, enabling you to choose
a community whose focus might be drawn from current events, from your interest
in particular professions, from courses taken as part of typical first-year programs,
or from developmental courses to which you might be referred by placement testing.
Most include a course in Information Literacy, IL 101, which also fulfills a General
Education requirement. Learning Communities for continuing students are comprised of
two or more thematically linked courses, most commonly General Education courses.
The ACE learning communities project was pilot-tested in fall 1998. Since then, student and faculty participation has grown steadily.
