Students loved them. By emphasizing they were doing Chemistry our students really got into the hands on approach The students loved the activities. They were always expected to get started and learned a lot from the activities. They begged for more. They loved it. They ask if today's lesson means we need to wear the goggles. They can't wait to take those home with them. They love hands on activities. They don’t even know they are learning! It’s great! They loved being "chemists" and learning about Chemistry. I am so glad I took the class…just the idea of chemistry motivated them, and when I told them about the class, investigations, and materials we would be using, they were so excited! Positively. They look forward to the kits/ experiments. Parents tell me their child loves science, especially the chemistry! Mostly, very positively, some felt it moved too slowly and didn’t connect the steps they followed to the final learning – but that’s OK |

Yes, the materials alone allowed me to do things I couldn’t have done because of budget constraints. Very valuable. I do many mini units on things like solids, liquids, and gases and many of these activities fit right into the curriculum. This was a fabulous experience! I would not have been able to teach chemistry to the students without this class, both because of lack of knowledge base and experience and because of the equipment and supplies. I hope to offer the experiments we have not yet tried at some point in the future. I have thought of offering it as a parent-child experience with me as facilitator. With the parent working with his/her student(s) each family could go at their own pace and reinforce what they are doing at home. Yes. They have also learned things that were not in my school’s curriculum – The main thing is they are taking on an attitude of inquiry – they want to know more… They want to know, "How did that happen". "What’s going on here?" "What else can I do with this?" Yes. I enjoyed teaching them about chemistry and increasing their appreciation of the sciences. Yes - I wouldn't have been able to pull such things together on my own. I believe so. I certainly promote a better attitude towards the sciences for girls and boys. One area I wonder about: I am not sure it helps the students to be prepared, [or, better prepared] for the science section of our yearly standardized test we have to take. There are very few questions asked on our standardized test. [frown] |
