Darwin Reading Assignment
|
|
I hope that you will find your first reading of Darwin enjoyable. His writing may seem a bit awkward and difficult to understand at first. Remember, he is writing in a style typical of his time and in one that differs a great deal from that used today. Be patient and read slowly, being sure that you understand the meaning of what you are reading. Rather than setting you the task of reading a selection to its completion, I ask that you spend at least 30 minutes reading (although I would be delighted if you do complete one or more chapters or sections, as I'm sure that you will understand more by extending your reading.). As you read, jot down some notes. What are the main points that Darwin is trying to make in the section that you are reading? How would you explain them to a layperson? What sort(s) of evidence does he marshal to support his arguments? What question(s) are you left with after this reading? If you could pose him a question, what would you ask Darwin about the subject matter at hand?
