Welcome to the home of Vertebrate Zoology, Biology 231, at SAU.    What could be more fascinating than taking an extended look at our closest relatives, the vertebrate animals?  Vert Zoo is an upper division elective taken primarily by Biology majors although all students with an interest in these marvelous animals are welcome.  The course provides an introduction to the origin, evolution and natural history of all major vertebrate groups.  In its lecture section, you will learn about the evolutionary history of vertebrates, from the earliest backboned fishes to the most recently evolved mammalian groups including our own; the forces that have driven a changing vertebrate landscape, including global forces such as continental drift and climatic change; the distinguishing characteristics of members of the Vertebrata; and begin to acquire an acquaintance with the major vertebrate faunal elements of our own region.  In laboratory study, you will have the opportunity to study the basic form of vertebrate animals through dissection and both observe and work with native vertebrate populations.  In addition, selected topics such as the endangered status of many vertebrate populations, the social behavior of vertebrates, migration, orientation, and many others, will amplify our study.  All in all, a delightful introduction to these beautiful and intricate biological machines is promised.
