Human Resource Management Student Written Evaluations

I take my student evaluations seriously especially the written comments and have made numerous changes to the class based on these comments. So that the class evolves over time in response to what I think are valid criticisms.

 Fall 99

1.   What did you like most about this course?

         1.   Goal achievement.  Grade system.

         2.   How small it was.

         3.   I believe I learned a great deal of information that I can use in the real world.  This wasn’t just “book stuff,” but valuable things to help me find and keep a job. Also, the knowledge that I can do it again, if that doesn’t work out.

         4.   The instructor.

         5.   All the above.

         6.   This course was by far one of the best I have ever taken.  It was enjoyable and very worthwhile.  This course was very job/real world oriented.

         7.   The information presented that related to the real world.

         8.   The classroom interaction and discussion.

         9.   This class seemed the most helpful for finding a job in the future.  It would be helpful for everybody to take this course.

        10.   I like the menu plan because you can choose what you want to do to earn your grade.  If you do poorly in one area, you can improve later by earning extra points.  The class is very challenging, but yet easy in some ways.  The class was explained very well.

2. What did you like least about this course?

         1.   N/A.

         2.   Too much work!

         3.         (Blank).

         4.   The amount of work required.

         5.         (Blank).

         6.         (Blank).

         7.   The long lectures.  There was participation, but sometimes it was hard to relate/participate.

         8.   The textbook was not the best choice.  It needs to be made a writing intensive course for credit.

         9.         (Blank).

        10.   We didn’t have due dates.  At times, I feel like I’m falling behind to catch up.

3.   What did you like most about this instructor?

         1.   His one-on-one approach.

         2.   His humor.

         3.   He provided weekly feedback so you always knew exactly where you stood.  Also, he was friendly and considerate to students.  Treated them as equals or friends, rather than lowly students who knew nothing.

         4.   The amount of feedback given.

         5.   Personality.  Thorough in agenda, well-spoken.  One of the best on campus.

         6.   His style of teaching.  Fabulous personality.  I appreciated the fact that he allowed us to turn in papers at  our convenience.  I felt as though it gave me ample time to really do a good job.

         7.   His knowledge.  How easy-going he was.

         8.   He’s one of the best teachers at SAU.

         9.   He was very interesting, down-to-earth, and seemed to give information that was in the best interest of the students.  The most helpful instructor I’ve had at Ambrose, as far as finding a job.

        10.         Professor knew what he was talking about, right to the point.  He is very understanding, helpful, and a great professor.  He provided sufficient feedback to students.

  Spring 99

 1.   What did you like most about this course?

         1.   The group discussions made it easier to understand things and come up with ideas.

         2.   Group discussions.

         3.   This course dealt with reality instead of textbooks.  There were also a lot of group discussions.

         4.         Although the course is a lot of work, it is very useful information.  One of the best courses I’ve ever had.

         5.   I learned a lot.  It wasn’t a course where I felt I was wasting my time or money.

         6.   It was small and we could have good discussions.

         7.   There were no tests, yet I felt I learned the information better than if I had been tested.  There were no due dates either.  We set our own schedule.

         8.   Very informative.  It wasn’t boring.  I learned a lot about my job.

         9.   The project approach is a good way to learn hiring, writing job descriptions, and writing/developing interview plans.

        10.   It was very group oriented, making it a fun class.

2.   What did you like least about this course?

         1.   Too many article reviews!!!

         2.   Some of the work seemed more like busy work.

         3.         (Blank).

         4.   I think this course should be classified as writing intensive, so students know what they’re getting into.  Not knowing ahead of time, it’s made for a difficult semester.

         5.   How much writing we had to do.  I didn’t realize I was getting into a course that demanded so much writing.  I’ve written less in W.I. courses.

         6.   I thought the job description paper was very confusing, what you put in which category and why.

         7.   There was so much writing for a non-intensive writing course.  Some of the article reports were busy work, and I didn’t feel I gained anything from them.

         8.   I think this should be a class for management majors because it’s all about their position.  It should also count as writing intensive.

         9.   I feel like there is more to the HR field, and that I need to find out more about the field some other way.

The class covered employment and hiring, but what about the other areas of HR?  Course should be a writing intensive course, especially if 4-6 papers are required.  Appreciate it being dropped to three.

        10.   It was kind of boring.  There was a lot of repeating going on.

 3.   What did you like most about this instructor?

         1.         Explained things well.  Got the point across.

         2.   He made sure that the students understood what was going on.

         3.   He gave us the view of both the management and the employees.  This helped a great deal with the assignments.

         4.   He is very knowledgeable in this field.  No nonsense style.  Up-front and frank.

         5.   He was down-to-earth.  He told everything as it is.  He could joke around, but it applied to what we were discussing.

         6.   He was informal and honest.  Jokes.  He wanted to tell us about things he knew would benefit us.  Always told stories as examples.

         7.   He provided sufficient feedback on our grades.  He laid out our assignments on the first day of class so we all knew what we had to do.

         8.   He kept your attention most of the time.  Gave participation points for each class.

         9.         Informal style.  No due dates on papers.  I like handing in papers when I’m done, and not just because of an arbitrary date.  Was available for questions, especially after class.

        10.   Very nice.  Easy to talk to.  He knew what he was talking about.

4.   What did you like least about this instructor?

         1.         Assigned too many article reviews!!!

         2.   Too much work.

         3.         (Blank).

         4.         (Blank).

         5.   He expected too much out of us as writers, sometimes.

         6.         Sometimes he’s too sarcastic.  It can hurt people’s feelings, depending on who they are.

         7.         Sometimes I didn’t feel he explained clearly enough how he wanted the assignments completed.  I was confused.

         8.   He grades hard.  I am not an English major, therefore, I do not write the greatest.

         9.   I had difficulty understanding his expectations for papers and the various parts of the project.

        10.         Nothing.  He’s a great guy.

Fall 98

 1.   What did you like most about this course?

I liked that we didn’t have tests on a final.

I thought the course had a very interesting and helpful content.  It’s something I can use every day.

I learned a lot that I didn’t know about HR Management.  A lot of it I have been able to apply to my life and my

other classes.

The style in which Dr. Richards presented it.

This course provided me with info for me in my major and future references.  I hope to use this info in my own

business someday.

Learning about what goes on with human resources.

(blank)

Learned a lot from papers and discussions.

The way the course relates to the real world issues and the “correct” ways of HR.

Information was very helpful and useful in business application.  The material was easy to understand and will

strengthen my personal skills needed for future jobs.

 2.   What did you like least about this course?

The project papers were a great idea.  I learned a lot from them, but there were 5 of them.  That would have been

fine except for the 6 - 6 page article reviews we had to do.  That’s 11 papers for one class!

(blank)

There was a lot of writing to do, which I expected.

That it was at 8:00 a.m.

All the papers we have to write.

TOO MUCH WORK!!!  I didn’t have time for my other classes.

8:00 a.m.

The workload was more than needed in Article Reviews.

3.   What did you like most about this instructor?

He was very clear on what he expected and always gave us good feedback on our work.  Very interesting to listen

to.

He was able to hold our interest which is sometimes hard to do at 8 a.m.

Showed a lot of student interest and stressed participation.

Did a good job of keeping my interest and of what he wanted to see in my work.

Good at keeping our attention.

He was very knowledgeable and cared a lot about the students.  He was very honest with us about the real world

and gave us tips on interviewing.

Very smart.  Great class discussions.

His feedback on your performance.

Good individual and very energetic.  He made the class exciting and very interesting and practical for all.

He demands best, which what is expected in the business world.

4.   What did you like least about this instructor?

This class had enough writing to be a writing intensive class, but it isn’t it should be.

A lot of work.
