* The AAUP is the national organization serving the academic community from the perspective of faculty concerns. It is dedicated to the promotion and defense of academic freedom, tenure, and due process, as well as the development of sound academic standards, policies, and practices.
** Regular chapter meetings give all faculty members - whether or not she/he is a member of the national AAUP, Iowa AAUP, or the SAU-AAUP Chapter - the opportunity to do several things. One is to learn more about national AAUP principles and policies by studying the new "Red Book." A second is to discuss ways the SAU Chapter can help the University better implement those national principles and policies. A third is to help faculty see themselves as vital members of a cross-discipline community of professional teachers and scholars who strive to practice INTEGRITY by cooperating with SAU administrators in the practice of the principles of collegiality (not politics), academic freedom, tenure, due process, and overall well-being. Each semester the Chapter prepares and distributes Integrity, an SAU-AAUP Chapter newsletter aimed at promoting intellectual thought and true community.
1. To promote the importance of acting in accordance with national AAUP policies and standards in the process of shared governance, particularly with respect to academic freedom, the process of hiring, evaluation, and tenure of faculty, and the maintenance of academic excellence.
2. To provide an effective ongoing forum within which the faculty can engage in candid dialogue independently and with the administration over matters of concern to the profession and within which the faculty can define and articulate its views on such matters.
3. To protect faculty well-being and fair treatment, through an ongoing dialogue on such matters as terms of employment, salary, benefits, and academic support; and
4. To work collaboratively with faculty and administrative bodies of the University in establishing, strengthening, and overseeing methods of academic governance.
