Q: How are the partner families selected?
A: Families in need of decent shelter apply to local Habitat affiliates. The affiliate’s family selection committee chooses homeowners based on their level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay the loan. Every affiliate follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing the families who receive Habitat houses.

Q:  Was Habitat for Humanity started by Jimmy Carter?

A:  No. Habitat for Humanity was started by Millard Fuller in 1976 as a way to fight poverty in the United States and abroad.

Q:  Does Habitat for Humanity give houses away?

A:  No. Habitat for Humanity builds houses for people and sells them to homeowners with a no interest loan that must be paid back. The homeowners also must put in sweat equity hours working to build their home and the homes of other future Habitat homeowners.
