Art Haege - Football

Inducted into Hall of Fame in 1990

For Art Haege, football was always a central part of his life. He played for the Bees from 1956-1959, and was a two-way starter in 1958 and 1959. During that time, the team compiled a record of 19-15-1 under head coach LG Friedrichs.

Haege was the leading pass receiver in 1958 and 1959. In 1959 he was a Little All American. He was named St. Ambrose Athlete of the Year for the ’59-’60 school year. Haege’s key memories from St. Ambrose include the Bradley game in 1958 and having 7 pass receptions vs. Drake in 1959. He was also a part of the History Club, Letterman’s Club, Golden Gloves, Amateur Baseball, and Intramurals.

Following his career as a Bee, he played briefly with the Boston Patriots (now the New England Patriots) in 1960-61, and was a linebacker with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1963 until a severe shoulder injury ended his career. He began coaching and gained a reputation for his ability to turn teams around. He is best known for his coaching stint with the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League.
