Motto to be remembered on helmets
|
|
By Maria Naert On Saturday, September 2, the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees dedicated their season-opening game, a 17-15 win over Loras, to their biggest and most loyal fan, T. R. Motto. Sadly, Motto passed away this past spring during vacation. In memory of his on-going support, the football team has decided to wear a "T" sticker on the back of each man's helmet to keep in their minds and hearts the same love of the game that Motto had on the sidelines. Through college, Motto ran cross country and track for St. Ambrose College, and graduated in 1969. He was continually supportive of SAU Athletics through good times and bad. Even after graduating, he continued to attend nearly every game, home or away. "Motto had a very strong faith in God," SAU athletic director Ray Shovlain said. "He was always appreciatively supportive of the mission of our university, to reach out to others." Motto lived this mission quite well as he did everything he could to keep the athletes upbeat, cheering and encouraging them on and off the field. While also attending all of the SAU football games, Motto could also be found trolling around Timmerman Field as the Bees practiced. "He was a huge fan of football," says Football Coach Todd Sturdy. "You could always find him at practice, which he rarely missed, in the office, or no doubt at every game each season. Motto was one of the first guys I met here in athletics. We'll definitely miss him in the program, around the practice field, and on game day." Motto had a way of warming up to the players and held a continuous concern for their well-being. "Everyone knew T. Motto," senior defensive lineman Ben Sacco said. "It was hard not to know who he was. He was always the one smoking on his cigar and asking how the team was doing. He kept an upbeat attitude and a smile on his face." Motto was always interested in the team. Besides the cigar, there were other things that made Motto distinct and unforgettable. "I think one of my biggest memories is looking up and seeing him in the stands with a big megaphone leading chants for the crowd," Sacco said. "He was definitely a cheering fan." Motto's team spirit will be carried on, not just with the football team this season, but with all athletics, carrying on the mission and attitude that Motto shared so well. His devotion to SAU shall be kept in the hearts of many and passed down for years to come. |
