St. Ambrose 13 Mt. St. Clare 4

St. Ambrose 9 Mt. St. Clare 6

After climbing back to an even 8-8 on the year, The Fighting Bees got a chance to go above .500 for the season and in conference play as they opened their MCC slate against Mt. St. Clare. St. Ambrose did just that as they swept a pair from the Mounties at Alliant Energy Field.

Returning All-Conference performer Sean Johnson picked right up where he left off last season by winning his 2003 conference debut. The Clinton native held the opposition bats in check for most of the night while his own offensive mates put on a hitting clinic. In total, the Bees rapped out 20 hits and posted 13 runs. Leading the way at the plate were a pair of seniors, Matt Gluplznyski and Logan Springer. The speed-challenged Gluplznyski was a triple away from the cycle and hit his first homerun as a Bee, while Springer added four hits and 3 RBI. Joining the hit parade were Bob Spadoni (2) Jake Miller (2) Chad Jones (3) and Mike Miller (2).

Johnson went the distance for his second win of the year, striking out seven and walking only 1.

In the nightcap, it was the Mounties that came out swinging. The home team scored five in their half of the first to erase the Bees early 2-0 lead. However, the offense once again came through and Dave Dexter buckled down to allow only one more run over the next six innings.

Jake Miller continued his steady hitting by launching his first homerun of the year in the first inning. The freshman also added three RBI. Kyle Gripp added two hits for the Bees.

Dave Dexter moves to 3-1 on the year.

The Fighting Bees next play in Chicago on March 5 and 6 against St. Xavier. Please check the schedule often as past weather has forced upcoming schedule changes.
