St. Ambrose 3 St. Francis 1

St. Ambrose 7 St. Francis 0

After spending a week indoors regrouping from a rigorous southern trip, The Fighting Bees found their winning ways in Joliet, IL on Saturday. Behind a pair of outstanding efforts on the mound and some timely hitting, St. Ambrose bumped their young record to 4-7 on the year.

In a game that was as crisp as the day was brisk, sophomore pitcher Sean Johnson was dominant from start to finish. The Clinton, IA native bested the 40 degree temperature and the St. Francis hitters in route to a complete game five-hitter that lasted only one hour and forty-five minutes. Johnson threw just 97 pitches while striking out four.

On the offensive end, the Bees struggled early to find some rhythm, but finally put things together in the sixth. Jake Miller (3 hits) doubled to lead off the frame and was singled home by Justin Siefken (2 hits). Senior Chad Jones then launched his fourth homerun over the left field wall of a beautiful Silver Cross Field.

The second game turned out to be a case of one-upsmanship for Dave Dexter. After Sean Johnson dealt a five hitter in the opener, Dave Dexter took a no-hitter into the final frame before giving up a pair of singles in the seventh. The two late hits were the only blemishes on the junior's resume for the day. Dexter threw seven complete innings, walking one while striking out ten of the 24 batters he faced.

Although it came late, Dexter got plenty of support from his offensive teammates. In the fifth inning, Logan Springer reached on an error before Joe DePaoli, Bob Spadoni and  Jake Miller followed with RBI base hits. The Bees tacked on one in the sixth and three more in the top of the seventh behind singles by Siefken, Mike Miller and KileGripp.
