Callahan Wins his 200th
St. Ambrose head baseball coach Jim Callahan preaches about being
strong in the three fundamental areas of baseball -- pitching, defense,
and timely hitting. In a doubleheader Friday at John O'Donnell, the Bees
got plenty of the first, some of the second, and just enough of the third
to secure a tough sweep of William Penn.
In the opener, sophomore Sean Johnson and William Penn's Brandon Lupul
matched each other pitch for pitch through the first five scoreless
innings. In the sixth inning, a single, a botched pick-off attempt
and an error allowed William Penn their first and only run. However, the
Bees matched that with one of their own off a double from Justin Siefken
scored a racing Jaymie Murphy from first base.
St. Ambrose then held serve in the seventh and eighth before loading
the bases in the ninth. Senior Logan Springer then fought off a pitch to
the right side for a single and the game winning RBI.
With the gutsy complete game performance, Johnson moves to 4-1 on the
year. Johnson struck out four, walked none and allowed only the one
unearned run.
In the second game, Dave Dexter again tried to outdo Johnson. The
crafty junior from Davenport spun an absolute gem, throwing the
complete-game three hitter. Dexter allowed only three singles while
striking out four.
The offense in this one came in the fifth, when the Bees used a Siefken
double and Mike Miller triple to post three runs. Joe Murray and
Logan Springer also added two hits apiece in the effort.
The win marks a milestone for the Bees' head coach. Callahan earned his
200th victory of his coaching career on Friday, all of which have come
during his nine years at St. Ambrose. His overall record now stands at
200-149 (.573).
The Bees move to 16-15 overall and 8-2 in the conference. These two
will lock horns again tomorrow at John O' Donnell stadium following the
Quad City River Bandits game.
