Getting the Most Out of a Recruitment Visit

Being recruited by a college can be an exciting experience for a student athlete.  One of the best parts is the campus visit.  It can be a very enjoyable and informational experience.  That is our goal.

An athlete must always remember the visit isn’t strictly a social occasion; that he is being toured around the campus, meeting the coaches, and checking the facilities for a purpose, and that is to evaluate the school while the school is just as carefully evaluating you.  In the midst of all the excitement, that’s an easy point for the athlete to miss.  A key to the recruiting visit is developing a list of important questions that must be asked and answered.

It is also important that an athlete and his family develop a list of pro’s and con’s of each school visited.  It will be up to the athlete and his family to determine which factors are more important.  Factors may include; location, school size, degree offerings, athletic program, facilities, scholarships, school philosophy, faculty, coaching staff, and etc.

The recruiting experience can be a great learning experience, but more importantly it should place you in a school and athletic program that best suits your needs.

Ten questions that should be asked during a recruiting visit

  1. What does the depth chart look like?
  2. How many players are you recruiting in my position?  How many do you plan to sign?
  3. How much is it going to cost me?  Will I qualify for any scholarship money?
  4. What happens if I don’t become a starter?
  5. What kind of academic support will I get?
  6. How long will it take me to graduate?
  7. What happens after I graduate?
  8. What if I get hurt?
  9. What kind of academic monitoring takes place?
  10. How long will the head coach be here?

Post-Visit Evaluation

  1. Were the coaches and other;
    1. Honest and frank with their answers
    2. Willing to give time to answering questions
    3. Friendly and hospitable
    4. Sincere, rather than “putting on a show”
    5. Enthusiastic about their roles and the program in general
  2. Did the atmosphere on campus seem comfortable?
  3. With my present skills and the level of competition at this University, would I have a playing future?
  4. Will there be opportunity for growth as a player?
  5. Do the staff and players care about each other?
  6. Could I succeed academically here?  Could I graduate with normal progress?
  7. Did the coach seem concerned about my academic life?
  8. Were the coaches competent in technical and organizational aspects of their jobs?
  9. Could I relate easily to the coaches, and would I be motivated by them?
  10. Is the location and size of the college suitable to my needs?
