John McDowell Named MSFA Player of the Week
When the final Mid-States Football Association Players of the Week honors were released on Monday, John McDowell's name was listed as the offensive selection.
Fighting Bees a Touchdown Favorite
According to the predictions posted on http://www.naiafootball.net the No. 14 St. Ambrose Fighting Bees are picked to win by a touchdown over No. 3 Georgetown, Ky. Head coach Todd Sturdy feels that it will have no effect on the game.
After spending hours shortening his roster to 48 players (the maximum the NAIA allows for playoff teams) head coach Todd Sturdy released his playoff roster.
Fighting Bees Have 19 Players on MSFA All-League Roster
MSFA all-league awards were given out today and 19 different Fighting Bees received that honor. The Fighting Bees had six players named to First Team offense and three on First Team defense.
It's a never ending story that repeats itself year after year. The No. 3 McKendree College Bearcats (6-0, 9-0) and the No. 15 St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees (5-1, 7-2) will square off once again this Saturday, November 16, at Brady Street Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
St. Ambrose comes into the game after a 34-7 road victory against William Penn (2-4, 4-6), rebounding from a heartbreaking 24-20 loss at home to the then No. 18 St. Xavier Cougars. Head coach Todd Sturdy likes the teams momentum coming into this weekends match up.
Although it is not a guarantee, the No. 15 St. Ambrose Fighting Bees (5-1, 7-2) will face off against the No. 3 McKendree Bearcats (6-0, 9-0) Saturday, November 16, after a 34-7 victory over the William Penn Statesmen (2-4, 4-6). With a victory, the Fighting Bees will have a shot at the extra season as it is not a guarantee. If they lose however, their season will be over.
It was a combination of Fighting Bees scoring on the day that led to the defeat of the Statesmen. Leading the day though was Brandon Adolphs. Adolphs rushed 17 times for 132 yards scoring twice as well as taking in three John McDowell passes for nine yards.
Adolphs MSFA Midwest Player of the Week Despite the 24-20 loss to No. 18 St. Xavier on Saturday, Brandon Adolphs came away with the Mid-States Football Association Midwest League Player of the Week crown. On the day Adolphs rushed for 163 net yards on 18 carries. Fighting Bees Streak Snapped by Cougars You would not have thought that a
football game had just been played at Brady Street Stadium in front of a
large crowd shortly after the game ended.
It went from the loudest place in the city to the quietest as John
McDowell was sacked on the final play of the game.
The No. 18 St. Xavier Cougars (4-1, 7-2) knocked off the No. 8 St.
Ambrose Fighting Bees (4-1, 6-2) 24-20 stopping the Fighting Bees Mid-States
Football Association Midwest League record streak at 18 consecutive
conference victories. Fighting Bees Continue Winning Ways The No. 8 St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees did not take things lightly on Saturday as they stormed out scoring 48 unanswered points and going on to defeat the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers (0-4, 1-6) by the score of 55-28. The victory for the Fighting Bees (4-0, 6-1) was the 18th in a row in the conference, continuing to set the bar higher as they have the current record. The Fighting Bees were led by Joe Schimmel who accumulated four touchdowns on the day, two by air and two by ground. His totals for the day were 14 rushes for 115 yards, three receptions for 127 yards as well as two kickoff returns for a total of 30 yards. Fighting Bees Break Record with Victory Seventeen straight conference victories. No other team in the history of the Mid-States Football Association Midwest Conference has accomplished that feat. That was true until Saturday when the No. 8 St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees (3-0, 5-1) defeated the Trinity International Trojans (0-3, 3-4) by the score of 19-7. The streak began way back on September 30, 2000, where the Fighting Bees defeated the Olivet Nazarene Tigers 23-14. The former record of 16 was held by Findlay, Ohio (1995-1997). "That was outstanding, I was proud of the kids and the seniors who have been a part of that for the past three years. That's a pretty good feat, I think, shoot, we're pretty happy with it," head coach Todd Sturdy said after realizing the accomplishment. The victory was sweet for the No. 12 St.
Ambrose University Fighting Bees (2-0, 4-1) as they stormed out to a 35-14
victory over the St. Francis (IL) University Fighting Saints (0-2, 1-4).
It was the 16th straight conference victory for the
Fighting Bees and it came on a night where the rain would not stop pouring
and neither would the yards for the Fighting Bees.
They would amass a total of 418 yards, 203 on the ground and 215 in
the air. Brandon Adolphs led the way with 203 all-purpose yards as he grabbed one John McDowell pass for 41 yards and rushed for 162 yards on the ground, scoring two touchdowns. It was also a “sweet” day for Adolphs as his average rush was 16.2 yards per carry. Fighting Bees Make it 15 in a Row in Conference Play The Fighting Bees continued their unbeaten conference run, making it 15 straight contests without a loss. Joe Schimmel and Brandon Adolphs combined to rush for 217 yards on 39 carries. John McDowell came back from last week's fourth quarter injury to throw for 132 yards on 13 of 22 passing, throwing for one touchdown. Lavill Figgs had five tackles on the day, one for a loss and also grabbed an interception. Adam Panther led the defense with 12 total tackles (three assisted). The No. 12 Fighting Bees (3-1) jumped out to a 20-3 lead midway through the second quarter. The Olivet Nazarene Tigers (0-4) would manage to fight within three, but Lavill Figgs interception with 4:57 left in the fourth quarter was all that the Fighting Bees would need as they would go onto win 23-20. Fighting Bees Remain Ranked 12th in Nation The NAIA polls came out again this week with no change for the St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees as they remained ranked No. 12 in the nation. The top 13 teams remained unchanged as well. Holding on to the top spot is Sioux Falls, S.D. as they remained unbeaten and received 15 of the 17 first place votes. It was not a sweet homecoming for the No. 5 St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees (2-1) as they fell to the University of Wisconsin – River Falls Falcons (1-2) 24-13 on Saturday. The Falcons amassed 289 yards of offense, 275 of those yards came from their running game. The Falcons controlled the possession game as they held the ball for almost 39 minutes of the game. They ran a flexbone offensive formation (similar to the wishbone) and it proved to keep the Fighting Bees defense guessing. The Fighting Bees defense allowed its first touchdown of the year, when John Peterlik (UWRF) ran three yards for the score. No Thunder, Lots of (Fighting) Bees While there was no thunder to be heard in Angola, IN, there were plenty of bees flying around Shive Field’s press box and on the field for that matter. The No. 7 St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees (2-0) ended their four-year series with the No. 10 Tri-State Thunder (1-1) with a 21-9 victory. It was the first and only victory for the Fighting Bees in their final of four games against the Thunder. The past two seasons games went into overtime and resulted in losses for the Fighting Bees, but this game was, as described by head coach Todd Sturdy, “a huge win for us.” The offense was dominating and for the defense it was business as usual. Fighting Bees Send Coyotes Running Home with Tails Between Their Legs The number nine nationally ranked St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees (1-0) stormed out to a 45-7 season opening victory over number 17 Kansas Wesleyan (0-1). In a game where both teams were coming off playoff years, as well as graduating numerous NAIA All-American players… one team showed its depth while the other showed inexperience. Brandon Adolphs had to fill the biggest shoes of them all and did a fine job of it. Adolphs, replacing First Team NAIA All-American and Mid-States Football Association Conference Player of the Year Nathan Norman, rushed for 77 yards on 18 carries, scoring two touchdowns as well as grabbing a 42-yard touchdown pass from John McDowell. McDowell had an all but flawless day completing 19 of 26 passes, amassing 277 yards. McDowell threw for four touchdowns and did not throw a single interception. Bees Look to Make it Three in a Row - 2002 Season Preview
The
St. Ambrose Fighting Bees roll into the 2002 season looking to build off
of the last two seasons. Coach Todd Sturdy and his coaching staff have
built one of the premiere programs in the Mid-States Football Association.
Coming
off of back-to-back conference championships, which included a combined
conference record of 14-0, the Fighting Bees once again set their goals
high to repeat their performance. The 2002 edition of St. Ambrose football
will look to come out strong and not bask in the glory of the prior two
seasons.
