He waited only an hour, but it seemed like days. When the phone finally rang, you could tell by the expression on head coach Todd Sturdy's face that his St. Ambrose Fighting Bees football team received a bid into the NAIA playoffs. The No. 14 Fighting Bees (8-2) will face off against defending NAIA National Champion No. 3 Georgetown, Ky., College Tigers this Saturday, Nov. 23 at 1:30 p.m. at Rawlings Stadium in Kentucky. This is the third straight playoff appearance for the Fighting Bees. Last year they traveled to Concordia, Neb. taking on the No. 8 Bulldogs, only to fall by the score of 31-26. In 2000, they defeated No. 12 Mary, N.D. by a final of 27-7 at Brady Street Stadium, but fell the next week to No. 11 Northwestern, Iowa by a score of 21-14. Georgetown, Ky., finished with a record of 9-1 and are ranked No. 3 in the final regular season NAIA polls, their only loss coming at the hands of McKendree College on Sept. 14. This is Georgetown's 11th trip to the playoffs, and their fifth consecutive. Winning the National Championship in 2000 and 2001, the Tigers hold a 12-2 record in the playoffs under current head coach Bill Cronin.
