Schimmel-Led Bees Win Third Straight

By: Ryan Holtmann

DAVENPORT, Iowa – The question of the day seemed to be, “How many did he have?”  That question was being asked in reference of how many yards St. Ambrose Fighting Bees running back Joe Schimmel had accumulated on the night.

Schimmel had entered the game with 1,176 rushing yards on the season and was 168 shy of 2,000 rushing yards for his career.  So the question was asked all during and myriad times following the game.

Schimmel fell just shy of the 2,000 career rushing yards mark, but he did rush for well over 100 yards, making it his ninth consecutive game in which he has hit that mark.

Schimmel finished the day with 142 yards on 22 carries, while hauling in five passes for 58 yards.

It was a balanced offensive attack combined with smothering play by the defense that helped the Fighting Bees pound the William Penn Statesmen (2-4, 2-7) by a score of 35-6.

Fighting Bees quarterback Jeff Kietzman threw for 220 yards on 16-of-28 passing, two for touchdowns and an interception, while rushing for 12 yards and a score.

It may seem like a broken record with the Fighting Bees defense, but they proved yet again that they can get better and why they are the MSFA’s top defense and nations sixth best.

William Penn never saw the red zone and their only score came in the third quarter, a 38-yard touchdown pass.

That 38-yard pass accounted for 43 percent of the passing yardage on the day as they only totaled 89 passing yards.

The ground game was no better as they only managed to net 64 yards rushing.

The Bees struggled in the first half, failing to get into the end zone on numerous attempts as receivers were just missing passes in the end zone.

But something must have been said at halftime as the Bees came out roaring in the second half, scoring 21 points in the third quarter.

For the game the Bees gained 482 yards with 262 coming from the air and 220 on the ground.

With the win, the Fighting Bees moved into a four-way tie for second place in the MSFA Midwest, one game behind McKendree, the Fighting Bees opponent next weekend.

Saint Xavier fell to Trinity International and McKendree knocked off Olivet Nazarene to bundle things up in the Midwest.

Next weekends game against McKendree will be broadcast on the flagship station of the Fighting Bees, KALA 88.5 and 105.5 FM.  It can also be heard on the Bees athletic website at www.sau.edu/athletics and click on the “listen live” link.
