St. Ambrose - Wartburg Scrimmage
By Ryan Holtmann

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Practice makes perfect, or at least that is what both coaches and players from St. Ambrose and Wartburg football teams are hoping after Saturday afternoon's scrimmage held at Brady Street Stadium.

On a rainy and cool day, coaches from both teams got their first real look at how their teams stack up to an opponent other than their own. After spending two weeks of seeing their own offense go against their own defense, both teams got to see different offenses and defenses.

St. Ambrose and Wartburg, who do not play each other in the regular season, have began to make this scrimmage an annual session. It is done in preparation for both teams' season openers and to see where both teams stand on the depth chart.

Both teams looked good, despite the soggy weather, and a decent crowd withstood the rain, wind and cool temperatures for the two-hour session.

The afternoon began with both teams' offenses and defenses taking on each other's offense and defense without linemen, mixed in with some special teams plays. The linemen were in the endzone working on one-on-one drills.

From there, the teams worked on punt returns before jumping into 2-minute drill work. The entire first half of the scrimmage had play stopped on contact to avoid injuries. Then during the 2-minute drills, everything went live except for the quarterbacks.

To finish out the day, both teams first string offense's got the ball on the opponents 30-yard line with a shortened clock to work with. The St. Ambrose defense held Wartburg to a short field goal. The Fighting Bees offense just missed a couple of opportunities at a touchdown. With no winners or losers in a scrimmage it was only fitting that kicker Matt Webster capped the day with a field goal.

It was even more fitting that the rain came to an end about the same time as the scrimmage did, and as players were departing the sun even managed to peak out.

The St. Ambrose Fighting Bees will open their season in two weeks when they travel to Dubuque, Iowa, to take on rival Loras at the Rock Bowl. Their season opener will be the following weekend at Brady Street Stadium, when they host Waldorf. Both games will kickoff at 1 p.m.
