Fighting Bees Continue Winning Ways In Big Win Over Taylor
By Ryan Holtmann

UPLAND, Ind. — It has not happened since 1996. The last time it happened, the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees went 9-1. The Fighting Bees are only hoping that this season will go the same way, if not better.

For the first time in seven seasons, the Fighting Bees finished their non-conference schedule without a loss and are now 3-0 entering Mid-States Football Association play after a 48-7 victory over the Taylor Trojans on Saturday at Jim Wheeler Stadium. The loss dropped Taylor to 0-3.

The Fighting Bees struggled to get on the scoreboard in the first quarter, but held the Trojans scoreless as well. Then things blew up in the second quarter. Six different Fighting Bees had a hand in the second quarter scoring that saw the Fighting Bees put 31 unanswered points on the board.

Running back Larry Williams scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 2-yard run with 11 minutes, 58 seconds remaining in the first half. Then the Fighting Bees scored four times in the final five minutes of the game.

Williams was the first to score, this time rushing 15-yards to the endzone. It was wide receiver Andy Ford’s turn next as he hauled in a pass from backup quarterback J.T. Bucy for the 53-yard score. Then starting quarterback Jeff Kietzman found wide receiver Chris Burhans from 15 yards out for the touchdown. Kicker Matt Webster added his fifth field goal of the season, this one from 42 yards, to cap the second quarter scoring.

The Fighting Bees offense didn’t stop there.

Running back Joe Schimmel got in on the scoring to start the second half with a 4-yard touchdown run to put the Fighting Bees up 38-0. Then just 2:48 later, Williams went 48 yards on the Fighting Bees first play to go up 45-0. Then with :34 left in the quarter, Webster kicked a 19-yard field goal to cap the Fighting Bees scoring on the day.

Taylor’s only score came with 2:10 remaining in the game when Mike Simon caught a 52-yard pass from Trennen Kidder.

The Fighting Bees had three players rush for over 100 yards on the day. Schimmel led the way with 18 carries for 141 yards, Williams had 121 yards on 12 carries, and Tyler Driscoll had nine carries for 110 yards.

Kietzman and Bucy both completed half of their passes. Kietzman finished the day 7-of-14 for 79 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Bucy was 2-of-4 for 61 yards and a score. Neither quarterback was sacked on the day.

Ford led the receiving core with 107 yards on five receptions and the touchdown. He also returned three punts for a total of 39 yards.

On the day, the Fighting Bees had 24 first downs compared to Taylor’s six. They also outgained the Trojans 472-169. The Fighting Bees also forced three turnovers, the third time this season that the Fighting Bees have forced at least three turnovers in a game. They forced the Trojans to punt 11 times.

Next week, the Fighting Bees will continue the two-game road trip when they travel to take on the St. Francis (Ill.) Saints at Joliet Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. They will then return home the following weekend to take on Trinity International in the homecoming game. Kickoff at Brady Street Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
