DAVENPORT, Iowa – If the sixth ranked St. Ambrose Fighting Bees win over 14th ranked Trinity International by a count of 42-18 wasn’t something to celebrate, at least there is one thing that the football program can celebrate two days after the win. The Mid-States Football Association announced late Monday that Fighting Bees running back Larry Williams was named the Midwest Division Offensive Player of the Week. In the commanding win, Williams powered the Fighting Bees rushing attack when he rushed 17 times for 211 yards and two touchdowns. And he was only one half of the Fighting Bees rushing attack. His partner in crime of
opponents’ defenses was running back Joe Schimmel. Schimmel also had a
big afternoon as he rushed for 176 yards on 26 carries and three
touchdowns. The two attacked the then fourth best rushing defense in the
MSFA. But it was Williams who took the
crown as the Offensive Player of the Week. Williams should have had a third
rushing touchdown, but as he stretched to push the ball over the goal
line, the ball was knocked loose. Officials ruled that the ball was
knocked loose before it crossed the goal line. On the season, Williams has rushed
for 553 yards on 65 carries, he has crossed the goal line nine times on
the year. He is averaging 8.5 yards per carry. He has returned five
kickoffs for a combined 120 yards. Williams has helped the Fighting
Bees get off to their best start since 1996. They are off to a 5-0 start
and are 2-0 atop the MSFA Midwest Division. This weekend, the Fighting
Bees will travel to Mount Pleasant, Iowa, to take on the Iowa Wesleyan
Tigers (1-5, 0-2) at Mapleleaf Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Return to the Football Homepage |
