Fighting Bees Make Playoffs After a One-Year Hiatus

The SAU football team finished the regular season 8-2 after a convincing 34-10 win over Olivet Nazarene Saturday. That marks the most games the 14th ranked Fighting Bees have won in three years, but their playoff hopes still hung in the balance Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon, those playoff dreams became reality, as SAU was selected as one of four at-large bids into the field of 16 in the NAIA postseason tournament.

"It's a credit to the kids and I think they've done a nice job, especially when you consider everything they've overcome this season with injuries and a couple tough losses," head football coach Todd Sturdy said.

The Fighting Bees will stay in-state for their first round game, as they'll travel to the other side of Iowa to face 3rd ranked Morningside College in Sioux City. Morningside is 10-0 on the year, winning the Great Plains Athletic Conference Championship this season. They also have one of the more explosive offenses in the nation. They Mustangs are averaging 42.4 points per game, while averaging 376 yards passing and 534.5 yards of total offense.

"They're one of the top five teams in the country, year in and year out and head coach Steve Ryan has done some great things with that program, which is one of the top offense in the country," Sturdy said.

Morningside's defense is no slouch either, allowing just over 12 points a game, but it's their offense that has given opposing teams fits all season long.

"Defensively, I think it will be a big challenge for us, and we're going to have our hands full, that's for sure, but we're going to get prepared this week and go over there and try to win a football game," Sturdy said.

This marks the fifth time in the last six years that SAU is headed to the postseason. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm at Elwood Olsen Stadium in Sioux City, Iowa, Saturday afternoon.
