SAU Overcomes Shaky Quarter to Rout Trinity International

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Up to this point in the season, the seventh ranked St. Ambrose football team hasn't had to overcome much adversity, winning their last three games by a combined 99 points. For a short time during the second quarter Saturday, Trinity International appeared to have St. Ambrose up against the ropes, before SAU blew the game wide open, winning 40-18.

SAU (5-0, 2-0) drew first blood, scoring on their first drive of the game on a three yard run by Tyler Driscoll, who had another busy day on the ground, rushing for 67 yards on 29 carries. St. Ambrose looked like they would run away with the game after Jeff Kietzman scored on a quarterback sneak two drives later. Evan Gutierrez added a 23-yard field goal early in the second quarter, putting SAU in the driver's seat with a 17-0 lead.

That's when the momentum swung, in favor of the Trojans (1-4, 0-2). On the next Trinity possession, the Trojans marched down the field in just over one minute, capping off their six play drive with an 18-yard TD from Ryan Thorson to Perry Wilson. The SAU defense then gathered themselves and managed to block the extra point.

SAU fumbled the ensuing kickoff, but were able to fall on it, eventually having to punt the ball away. Trinity wasted little time once they got the ball back, as Thorson threw a 70-yard TD to Dustin Copeland on the second play of their drive. The Trojans' two point conversion attempt failed however, and SAU led 17-12.

After a couple punts, SAU was driving for a late score, but Tyler Driscoll fumbled at the 40 yard line and Trinity recovered. After the Fighting Bee defense held, it looked like the two teams were headed for halftime, but Trinity still had to punt the ball away. It wasn't that easy. The snap was sent over the head of the TIU punter. Thirty yards later, SAU had a chance to add to their lead, as they got the ball back on the Trinity 13-yard line with 18 seconds left. Jeff Kietzman didn't waste the golden opportunity, hooking up with Brett Van Hove for the 13 yard score, sending the Fighting Bees to the locker room with a 23-12 lead and a huge confidence builder.

After halftime, the Fighting Bees came out more focused, trying to build on their late touchdown, and build on that they did. SAU outscored Trinity 17-6 in the second half to seal the victory, including two scores by Driscoll, who made up for his fumble by getting in the end zone three times, keeping him atop the MSFA in scoring.

SAU held Trinity to a staggering negative 87 yards rushing in the game, thanks in part to linebacker Dan Eble, who recorded eight tackles and three sacks, while also breaking up two passes. The defense sacked the Trinity quarterback nine times in the game, while also coming up with a fumble recovery, which led to another score.

Next week, the Fighting Bees will hope for the same result against Iowa Wesleyan, as they'll return home for a rare night game at Brady Street Stadium against at 7:00.
