Fighting Bees Win Wild One
Despite some fireworks in the last 3.1seconds of the game,
the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees (13-11, 4-2) moved one step closer to
returning to the top spot in the MCC with an 81-77 victory over the Mt.
Mercy Mustangs (12-8, 4-2).
Matt Fitzpatrick led the Fighting Bees with 18
points. Three other Fighting Bees scored in double figures on the
night as well, Tom Pavljasevic (17 points, nine boards, six assists); Karl
Petersen (13 points, three blocks); and Chad Tancil (11 points).
The Fighting Bees led by eight with 00:08 showing on the
clock. Mike Wehr (MMC) hit a runner in the lane to bring the
Mustangs within six with 3.1 ticks left on the clock. On the shot
Pavljasevic comitted a foul which Fitzpatrick questioned. As he did,
the referee called a technical foul on Fitzpatrick, who pleaded his case
and was t'ed up again, resulting in Fitzpatrick being tossed out of the
game.
This gave Mt. Mercy four free throw shots, plus another to
finish off the foul by Pavljasevic. Jason Pershing made three of the
four technical shots and Wehr made his to bring the Mustangs to within
two. Devon Waite fouled Pavljasevic with 1.9 showing on the
clock. Pavljasevic made both free throws to give the Fighting Bees a
four point lead and the game.
Leading the Mustangs was Wehr with a game high 22
points. Also in double figures were Gary Mackey (13), Kyle Hach (11)
and Brian Buerman (10).
The Fighting Bees will continue a four game homestand with
the third game of that stretch on Wednesday night against Mt. St. Clare at
5:30 p.m.
