Fighting Bees Win Wild One

Despite some fireworks in the last 3.1seconds of the game, the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees (13-11, 4-2) moved one step closer to returning to the top spot in the MCC with an 81-77 victory over the Mt. Mercy Mustangs (12-8, 4-2).

Matt Fitzpatrick led the Fighting Bees with 18 points.  Three other Fighting Bees scored in double figures on the night as well, Tom Pavljasevic (17 points, nine boards, six assists); Karl Petersen (13 points, three blocks); and Chad Tancil (11 points).

The Fighting Bees led by eight with 00:08 showing on the clock.  Mike Wehr (MMC) hit a runner in the lane to bring the Mustangs within six with 3.1 ticks left on the clock.  On the shot Pavljasevic comitted a foul which Fitzpatrick questioned.  As he did, the referee called a technical foul on Fitzpatrick, who pleaded his case and was t'ed up again, resulting in Fitzpatrick being tossed out of the game.

This gave Mt. Mercy four free throw shots, plus another to finish off the foul by Pavljasevic.  Jason Pershing made three of the four technical shots and Wehr made his to bring the Mustangs to within two.  Devon Waite fouled Pavljasevic with 1.9 showing on the clock.  Pavljasevic made both free throws to give the Fighting Bees a four point lead and the game.

Leading the Mustangs was Wehr with a game high 22 points.  Also in double figures were Gary Mackey (13), Kyle Hach (11) and Brian Buerman (10).

The Fighting Bees will continue a four game homestand with the third game of that stretch on Wednesday night against Mt. St. Clare at 5:30 p.m.
