Shovlain
honored by Iowa Basketball Coaches
Association
Ray Shovlain, head
men’s basketball coach and athletic director at St. Ambrose University,
is the 2004 recipient of the Paul Maaske Award presented by the Iowa
Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA).
The award is
presented each year to a non-Division I collegiate coach in Iowa.The award is in honor of Paul Maaske, who was a long time coach at
Cornell College in Mount Vernon, IA.Shovlain is a repeat winner, previously being honored in 1989.
Shovlain led his
squad to the school’s first NAIA Final Four appearance this spring.The 2003-2004 Bees finished with a 32-6 record, shattering the
school’s previous win record of 26 wins (1988-89 and 1999-00).This season also included the school’s first ever win over
an NCAA Division I opponent, defeating Western Illinois 80-65 on January
26 at Macomb, IL.
Shovlain recorded
his 400th career win on February 7th, with a 62-52
win over Viterbo at LaCrosse, WI.Shovlain
is the school’s winningest coach with a career record of 408-279 in 21
seasons.Under his tenure, the Bees haveposted 13 20-win seasons.
Jamie Sale at
Morningside College was the women’s coaching recipient.
Sale led Morningside to a 34-4 record and the NAIA Division II National
Championship.
