Fighting Bees Win 12th Game
of the Season

CHICAGO – The
No. 8-ranked St. Ambrose Fighting Bees came back after an 13-day break to
play their 13th game and escaped the first round of the Saint
Xavier Midwest Tournament with a 83-78 victory over the Mount Marty (S.D.)
Lancers.
The win improves the Bees to 12-1
on the season and advances them to the semi-final round of the tournament
and will take on The Master’s College (Calif.) at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Davenport Central graduate Karl
Petersen led the Fighting Bees with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Petersen was one of four Fighting Bees who were in double figures.
Matt Fitzpatrick had 18 points, 4
assists and 4 steals to go along with Ryan Johnson’s 16 points and Chad
Tancil’s 12.
The Bees trailed 38-34 at the half,
but battled back in the second half to regain the lead.
Mount Marty’s Justin Bonnichsen had a chance to tie the game with
3-seconds left in the game, but his 3-point attempt rattled around the rim
and out.
Matt Fitzpatrick sank both free
throws to secure the win.
Despite shooting 57.6-percent,
Mount Marty could not overcome the Fighting Bees defense, which forced 21
turnovers.
Four Lancers also were in double
figures, led by Bonnichsen, who dropped in 17.
Lucas Klumper added 14 points and 11 rebounds while Shaun Reiff had
14 points and 10 rebounds.
Cole Knippling added 10 points as
well.
The Lancers fell into the losers
bracket and will take on St. Francis (Ind.) at 2 p.m.
The Saint Xavier Midwest Tournament
is held annually and is one of the top holiday tournaments in the country.
All games are played at the Shannon Center on the campus of SXU.
