Quick start propels Bees to win MCC title
DAVENPORT,
IOWA- Matt Fitzpatrick hit a career high six 3-pointers to lead the
Fighting Bees (27-3, 11-1) to an 85-76 win over Grand View. With the
victory, the Fighting Bees won the Midwest Classic Conference regular
season title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming MCC tournament, which
begins on Feb. 27. The win set a school record for wins in a season with
27.
The Fighting
Bees jumped out of the gate with a 16-2 lead in the first 3:50 of play.
The Bees extended the lead to 18 after Jon Digmann torched the net for
three consecutive 3-pointers in a 1:32 span. The Bees started the game
hitting seven of their first nine 3-pointers, but Grand View kept their
composure and cut the halftime lead to 44-34.
Karl Petersen
hit the first basket of the second half to up the lead to 12, but Grand
View came right back with six consecutive points to cut the lead to single
digits. The Bees would never lead by more than nine points for the rest of
the game.
Grand View
couldn't get the lead under four points until the 2:56 mark when Jovaughn
Cameron hit a layup to cut the Bees lead to two.
Leading 79-76
with 1:10 left, senior Brett Jacobs drilled a clutch 3-pointer to extend
the lead to six and end the Vikings chance of an upset. The win proved to
be the 12th straight for the Fighting Bees.
Fitzpatrick
led the Bees with 29 points and added eight assists. Karl Petersen
recorded another double-double wit h17 points and 11 boards. Petersen also
recorded his 100th career block. The Fighting Bees hit 12 of 25 3-pointers
on the night.
Brandon Warner
led Grand View with 19.
Senior Day is
on Saturday, as the Bees host Mt. Mercy at 3:00.
