IOWA- In a game that
saw its highs and lows, the No. 7 St. Ambrose Fighting Bees, led by Ryan
Johnson, lived up to their high expectations with a 70-60 win over William
Penn for their first MCC victory of the season.
The Bees
started the game on fire hitting four 3-pointers to jump out to a 14-2
advantage in the first 4:13 of play. In that span, junior Ryan Johnson hit
three 3-pointers in a 1:23 span, capped off by a 4-point play. William
Penn fought right back, scoring the next 10 points of the game to cut the
lead to 14-12. St. Ambrose played right back at the Statesmen with a 15-4
run of their own to up the lead to 13 following a Johnson layup. The
Fighting Bees went into the half leading 43-31.
St. Ambrose
came out in the second half and built their lead to 16 with 13:37
remaining, but the offense suddenly would hit a dry spell. Chris Klassen
led the Statesmen back with a 19-6 run over the next 10 minutes to cut the
Bees advantage to 59-56. St. Ambrose bounced back, as Matt Fitzpatrick
scored the next three points of the game and upped the lead to six with
1:18 left. St. Ambrose held on for a 70-60 victory.
Ryan Johnson
led four Fighting Bees into double figures with 22 points. Karl Petersen
added 14, Chad Tancil scored 11 and Fitzpatrick chipped in with 11 points
to go with eight assists. Chris Klassen led William Penn with 19. The
Fighting Bees moved to 16-3, 1-1 and will play at Franciscan on Saturday.
