Bees Split a Pair in Bethel Tournament BETHEL, IN- The St. Ambrose men's basketball team has had an up and down season so far in 2004. That trend continued over the weekend as they split a pair of games in the Gates Automotive Classic in Bethel, IN. In game one of the tournament on Friday, the Fighting Bees lost to Robert Morris College 87-80 after a sub-par second half. They were up by three at the half, but were outscored by ten in the second period. The Bees were out rebounded in the game 43-27. Leading the way for St. Ambrose was senior Ryan Johnson. He led all scorers with 25 points, while grabbing five boards. Chris Washington helped out with 14 points and four assists, while Nick Ferreira and Ricky Mojek each finished the game with eleven. Robert Morris had five players score in double figures, including two guys off the bench. The Eagles bench outscored the Bees bench 38-24. Leading the way for Robert Morris was Steven Briggs, who scored 13 points. Derek Powe and Brian Price each finished with 12 in the win. On Saturday, the Fighting Bees tried for a much different result, and they got it, defeating Madonna University 101-85 in the consolation game of the Bethel Tournament. The Fighting Bees outshot Madonna 59% to 48% during the second half en route to the victory. Turnovers helped key the win with Madonna turning it over 24 times to St. Ambrose's 17. SAU was led by Ryan Johnson who just missed a triple double, recording 23 points, ten rebounds, and eight assists. He also hit on all three of his three pointers, as well as all six of his free throws. Fellow senior Nick Ferreira scored 20 for the game on 8 of 10 shooting. Matt Wilke and Chris Washington also scored in double figures with 13 points a piece. Madonna was led by Derrick Mudri with 22 points. Noel Emenhiser and DJ Bridges each scored 14. Bridges also added nine rebounds. Madonna was out rebounded in the game. 41-29. They shot 48% for the game, compared to the 55% shooting for the Fighting Bees. St. Ambrose will try to continue their winning ways next weekend as they'll be in Chicago for the St. Xavier Invitational, which will be held December 19, 20, and 21. Return to the Men's Basketball |
