Quick Start Propels SAU To Win

DAVENPORT, Ia- The Fighting Bees came to play Wednesday night, looking as sharp as a razor blade coming out of the gates, en route to a 98-87 win over William Penn (15-12, 7-2).  St. Ambrose (15-11, 7-2) never trailed in the game, getting out to a 35-8 lead in the first half, including rattling off 18 consecutive points.  SAU led 49-25 at the half.  The win moves them into a first place tie atop of the MCC standings with the Statesmen.

St. Ambrose put together a tremendous team effort with Ryan Johnson leading the way with 25 points, including twelve free throws.  Nick Ferriera scored 17, while grabbing five rebounds, and stealing the ball three times.  Adam Fahrenkrog gave the team a spark off the bench, scoring 14 and collecting eight boards.  He also came up with two huge blocked shots.  Matt Wilke also came off the pine to score twelve points and grab five rebounds.  Chris Washington was the fifth SAU player in double figures, scoring twelve.

William Penn never fully recovered from falling behind by so much early in the game.  They put up a fight in the second half, highlighted by 10 for 16 shooting from beyond the arc, while scoring 62 points in the second half, but it was not enough.  Brad Nicholson scored all of his 19 points for the Statesmen, including five three's.  Danny Lund chipped in with fifteen points and five boards.  Julian Assibey scored 13 and recorded six steals.  Levi Tarbell scored twelve points, while Joe McKinstry and Ryan Norman each had eleven.

St. Ambrose will now go on the road for three consecutive games, starting Saturday in Clinton, IA against The Franciscan.  That game will begin at 3:00.
