CLINTON,
Iowa -- For the first 20 minutes during Wednesday night's game, it looked
as if Ashford would pull the biggest upset of the conference season. Coach
Ray Shovlain had only lost to the Saints four times in 44 meetings, but
for a while it looked like this may be the fifth time. In the end though,
it was the usual result, with the Fighting Bees coming out on top, 71-60.
The two teams played neck-and-neck for much of the first half. Then, with
six minutes remaining, the Saints made a mini-run. Ashford finished the
half on a 13-4 run, as they led 26-19 at halftime. SAU shot just 27% in
the first half, while also missing all ten three-pointers they attempted.
Ashford, on the other hand, shot 44% en route to the lead at intermission.
The second half was a completely different story. For the first time this
season, SAU looked invincible. After falling behind by nine with 17:27
left in the game, the Fighting Bees went to town, going on a 26-3 run, not
allowing a single field goal in that span. At one point, SAU scored 13
unanswered, as they led by 17 when the run was done. Ashford never came
within single digits the rest of the way, as SAU came away with their
second win in a row.
Chris Washington led SAU with 17 points, five assists, and four steals.
Andrew Bryant finished the game with another double-double for SAU, as he
scored 13, while pulling down ten rebounds. Ricky Mojek and Will Howard
also scored in double figures for the Fighting Bees, scoring 12 and 10
points, respectively. Howard connected on four of his five shots,
including two of three from downtown.
Ashford was led by Nick Lawrence's 17 points, five assists, four rebounds,
and four steals. Travis Eversmeyer added eleven points for the Saints.
Somori Mussington scored eight, while pulling down nine rebounds.
SAU will try to keep up with their winning ways, as they'll host Viterbo
on Saturday in their conference home opener. Tip off is set for 3:00 and
will be preceded by the women's game against the V-Hawks.
