2006 Fall Review / 2007 Spring Preview

After a very successful fall season which included six tournament wins including the NAIA Region 7 Championship and a berth in this spring’s NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship, the St. Ambrose Men’s Golf Team looks forward with much confidence to the upcoming spring 2007 season.

Currently ranked 7th  in the Golf Coaches Association (GCAA) NAIA Men’s Golf National Preseason poll, the Fighting Bee’s will look to improve on their team best 3rd  place finish in 2004 when they tee it up at the 56th Annual NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship May 22-25, 2007, at The Golf Club of Indiana in Plymouth,  Indiana.

The men’s golf team finished in 4th place at the 2006 national championship.

This will be the Fighting Bee’s 19th appearance in the men’s golf national tournament since 1982.

The fall tournament season began in record breaking fashion with victory at the St. Ambrose Invitational.  The Fighting Bee linksters broke the 18 hole school scoring record on day two of the tournament firing a 16 under par score of 272.  Combined with the teams first day score of 285 the bee’s also set a new school 36 hole scoring record of 19 under par 557, winning the tournament by a whopping 23 shots.

The team also had tournament victories at Loras, Mt. Mercy, Iowa Wesleyan, St. Francis and at the fall season ending NAIA Region 7 championship.  The varsity squad posted a team stroke average of 294 in the fall.

The fall team was lead by 05-06 Midwest Classic Conference Player of the Year and NAIA All-American Drew Chuipek (Junior, Gilberts, IL).  Chuipek was medalist at the St. Ambrose Invitational firing a 36 hole total of 12 under par 132.  He finished 2nd at the NAIA Region 7 Tournament and was named to the All Region Team.  Chuipek is currently ranked as the No. 7 player in the nation in the 2006/07 Golfstat NAIA individual national rankings.  Chuipek’s competitive stroke average was 71.2 in the fall.

Jimmy Marinelli (Senior, Byron, IL) was medalist at the Mt. Mercy North Country Golf Classic with a 36 hole total of one under 143.  Marinelli had a competitive stroke average of 74.8 in the fall.

Ben Hanson (Senior, Dubuque, IA) was medalist at the NAIA Region 7 Championship with a 36 hole total of one under 143.  He was named the 2006/07 NAIA Region 7 Player of the Year.  Hanson had a competitive stroke average of 73.1 in the fall.

Tim Harrigan (Junior, Oak Lawn, IL) was medalist at the Loras Invitational with a 18 hole score of three under par 69.  Harrigan had a competitive stroke average of 74.4 in the fall.

Dusty Drenth (Freshman, Davenport, IA)  was medalist at the Iowa Wesleyan Invitational with a 36 hole total of one over par 145.  He finished 2nd at the NAIA Region 7 Tournament and was named to the All Region Team.  Drenth had a competitive stroke average of 73.5 in the fall.
