2002 Men's Golf Season Preview
The St. Ambrose University Men's Golf Team looks forward to another
successful 2002/2003 schedule under Coach Jeff Griebel who begins his 20th
season as Head Coach. The Fighting Bee linksters are
coming of a very successful 2001/2002 campaign, which included 7
tournament victories including the Midwest Classic
Conference Men's Golf Championship for the 4th year in a row.
The Ambrose Golf Team will be lead by returning Midwest
Classic Conference 2001 Player of the Year Joe
Demory (Sophomore, Sterling, IL.). Demory also was champion at the Iowa
Wesleyan Invitational and had a stroke average of
73.9 in 18 competitive rounds as a freshman. He also was named to the NAIA
All Region Men's Golf Team resulting from his 3rd place finish at the
regional championship.
Also returning to the Fighting Bee squad will be NAIA 2001 Region 7
Player of the Year Jason McGrane (Sophomore, Guttenberg, IA.). McGrane
posted a season ending stroke average of 76.3 in 18
competitive rounds last fall, winning the NAIA Regional Championship and
qualifying for the NAIA Men's Golf National Tournament as an individual
which was held in May 2002 in Palm Harbor, Florida.
Also returning to the Ambrose golf squad this season are 2001 Midwest
Classic All Conference Players Nick Dreckman
(Senior, LeMars, IA.) and Darren Hince (Junior, Carol Stream, IL.).
Other returning letter winners from the 2001/2002 season include Andy
Sirois (Senior, Ft. Madison, IA); Andrew Howard (Senior, Marshalltown,
IA.); Ryan Anglin (Senior, Dubuque, IA.); Mike
Neville (Senior, Anamosa, IA.); Cody Flatt (Sophomore, Monmouth, IL.);
Matt Rupiper (Sophomore, Henry, IL.); Andy Kahl
(Sophomore, Lowden, IA.); Brandon Mills (Sophomore, Dubuque,
IA.) & Sunil Taneja (Sophomore, Peoria, IL.).
Brian Stamberger (Senior, Mendota, IL.) will be returning to the St.
Ambrose Golf squad after taking a year off to work
full time in his home town. During the 2000/2001 season, Brian won the
NAIA Regional Golf Championship and was named 2000 NAIA Region 7 Player of
the Year.
The addition of three freshman players to Coach Griebel's roster should
also bolster the teams depth. They are Bryan Lemkau
(Freshman, Muscatine, IA.); J.T. McKee (Freshman, Muscatine, IA.)
& Joe VanderBeke (Freshman, East Moline, IL.) McKee finished 2nd and
Lemkau finished 3rd in the 2001 Iowa High School Class 4A State
Championship, leading Muscatine High School to the Class 4A State
Championship.
